Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Article in the Independed says Biden's support for ERA is a step forward for LGBT rights against religious fundamentalism - and no mentions whatsoever that women's sex based rights will be eroded

It is so depressing to see that in this article there is no reference at all to how the EA (US) as currently drawn up will erase women's sex based rights.

I was going to suggest emailing the writer but it turns out it is an AP briefing, so maybe an email to the editor www.independent.co.uk/service/contact-us-759589.html

AP seems to think this is a religious story - cant see anyway of contacting them apnews.com/article/joe-biden-donald-trump-barack-obama-discrimination-marriage-fbdd826a46b3c77c265967c73b7ff6e0 //[email protected]

I wanted to send a link to the WoLF (I think) video briefly that laysout in a really straight forward way how women will be negatively impacted, eg sport, prisons, and ...

But I cant find the link. Does anyone have it?

You would think that Biden would want to take advantage of the fact that because this has not yet been past he / the Democrats could look at how a law like this had in practice negatively impacted women ie real life examples from Ireland, Canada and so on.

There seem to be two different groupings of feminist in response to this:

You can’t expect unbiased reporting from the independent. Worse than the guardian.

That's not the point.

I thought someone would come up with a useful idea of things to put in a letter.

We all know about the Guardian, etc.. But as I said this is in fact a news story being distributed by AP news. This means any number of lazy news papers will just reprint it probably with out even reading it.

ie both the editor at the Independent and at AP news need to be told they haven't "fact checked" their story.

We cant just sit around letting the lies wash over us and hope the Times (which is behind a paywall) might occasion print some gender critical article.

As already said - it’s the Independent! You can’t expect more from that shower.

Someone smarter will come along. I think I’ve seen something about this on twitter this morning.

Hello, hello - it is NOT the Independent. It is a press release from AP news service. ie it has gone round the world. ie it means all over the world people are being told by newspapers who are too lazy to check the facts that the only criticism of the EA are religious ones.

Seriously, if we all just sat back any time news media said something about women that was wrong "oh well that's the media for you" groups like WPUK would never have started.

Maybe I should try and contact some US feminists as it directly effects them.

Sad

I agree it's very depressing. The trouble is that I think the time to talk about this was during the US election campaign while Biden needed votes. He doesn't need to listen now.

I'm not pointing the finger at you by the way op. I understand the frustration. But as I remember any attempts to discuss this in the run up to the election were well and truly sat on.

An American feminist here, I didn't like the EA but didn't want Biden to lose because women's rights would be (are) worse under Trump. However, now is the time for US feminists to fight the wording in this ASAP. One way to do that is to push the ratification of the ERA - which does provide sex-based rights for women.

And this is why I didn't vote for Biden while feminists were blithely ignoring that he promised to do this. It it's baffling to me that hatred of Trump's personality is so strong and cult-like that we blew our biggest chance to legally stop the encroachment of gender ideology. Depressing.

Trump's evangelical base has extreme views on gender as well, but of the patriarchal, controlling women's bodies variety. It wasn't hatred for Trump alone, it was full knowledge of what happens under a GOP majority government.

Nonsense. It was a choice between further curbing women’s bodily rights, rights to contraception, and the rights of gay and lesbian people vs possibly having to work on getting some amendments in on the US EA (as well as continuing to work to pass the ERA as written).

As it is, it’s unlikely that the EA can get past senate without amendment. Even if we manage to get both GA seats for Dems (not a done deal) Republicans can still filibuster. There is room to fix the issues if US feminists write to their senators. #amendtheEqualityAct

Also it’s my view that 4 more years of trump would have done nothing but further enrage the woke authoritarians. They came to power under Trump, in response to him id argue.

Agree! Please share any resources or orgs you know of. I've written my Congressional reps already. Now, I'm trying to persuade my local groups.
