Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Could team 'Brooklyn99' be gender-critical?!!

Just watched the episode about Jake & Amy's baby's sex-reveal party.

Yes, sex!

Not gender!!

The g-word not mentioned once!!!

'Biological sex' specified!!!!

What's HAPPENING? 😃

Also intriguing that some are taking it as them saying sex is noted at birth ...

And others are taking it as all being about trans rights (the cake is green because how can you reveal a baby's gender...)

I can't decide which it is. Or both?

Are they going to be correct about it and say that you can't tell the baby's gender while they're in utero because sex does not equal gender?

I feel so sorry for anyone attempting to write for this sort of fandom. Have you been correct in the way you've written your script today or are we going to have to cancel you?

(No idea what the creators were going for, would have to actually see the episode.)

I would have thought "sex reveal" makes sense to both the gender critical and those who support self ID.

I hope so as I'm a big Andy Samberg fan ('Hot Rod' is a great film).

What channel are the new ones on? Dh keeps telling me there aren't any more!

Greys Anatomy dealt with this recently, 2 pregnant characters talking about a gender reveal party and sure the other replied that you don’t know what gender the baby will end up to be - which is true but felt shoehorned in. Gender reveal parties are about revealing the baby’s sex anyway - not gender. Should really be a sex reveal party

Some people are afraid of the word "sex" these days. Wankers.

Nobody talks about making a gender-tape tho..

A whole new context for the term gender fluid(s). 🙈

If there's going to be any gender fluid around I'd like some PPE, please.

it's on channel 4, it wasn't made a big deal if they simply said sex instead of gender. It is very respectful and "correct" comedy. the jokes are never at the expense of minorities which makes it such a great show. jake and amy both mentioned the topic to terry's kids saying you don't have to be a girl if you don't want to be. i think they just wanted to express that they will accept their child no matter who the decide to be.

you don't have to be a girl if you don't want to be.

What's that supposed to mean? Your sex is not a choice.

when jake and amy babysit cagney and lacey they talk about sexism and one of the says- " i don't want to be a girl" and he says you don't have to be if you don't want to be but that's a different convo.

“Cagney and Lacey” 😂

My son loves this show but i just catch it now and then. Just asked him if he knew who C&L were and he straight away said “yeah, Terry’s kids” 😂

Agreed, OldCrone. A girl is born with XX chromosomes- there is no option for changing them!
She can of course reject the crappy outdated gender stereotypes attached by sexists, and live her life as whatever kind of kickass confident woman she wants to be - but her sex is immutable.

I love B99. And I do support trans people.

But so many girls grow up thinking that being a girl/woman is a bad thing to be, because of the enormous pressures of sexism, misogyny, substantially higher risk of rape and abuse, etc.

And they’re not entirely wrong. Being a woman in an intensely misogynistic patriarchy can be a pretty terrible thing. Being a woman living in a rape culture is horrible.

But giving young girls who are struggling to cope with these pressures the idea that they can simply opt-out is false. I have a lot of friends who decided to declare themselves transmen or non-binary because they couldn’t tolerate being groped, catcalled, harassed, condescended to, and the thousand other daily acts of casual sexism most of us are familiar with. That’s very sad, because calling yourself non-binary or trans doesn’t necessarily stop you being a victim of those things. And it’s horrific beyond words that women feel they must chop off their breasts and take hormones just to avoid being raped and oppressed. And where does that leave women who aren’t willing to go to such extreme lengths to avoid sexism and misogyny?

We should put our efforts into stamping out sexism and sex-based abuse, not raising a generation of girls to believe that the first time they’re groped/harassed/discriminated against, they should simply ID out of being female, rather than standing up to that abuse.

I'm a big fan of B99 and generally think they get a lot right with portraying women, black and Hispanic characters. That said, Terry Crews aside, I do think they are most likely on the woke end of gender politics. Remember Chelsea Peretti (Gina) is the sister of Jonah who founded Buzzfeed.

Andy Samberg DID do this song in Popstar though which makes me suspect he's very onto the appropriation of gay culture by straight men.

But that would make her a feminist, and possibly even a terven witch.

It's sad that so many young women who don't want to conform to gender stereotypes reject feminism in favour of a fantasy in which they can change sex, or not have a sex at all.

Haven't see the episode yet, but whatever they called it, if the party was all about having a pink child or a blue child, it was a gender reveal party.
