Amazing episode of The Orville!

I loved this week’s episode of The Orville!

The episode is called Sanctuary (Series 2, episode 12) and concerns a colony of female Moclans.

The Moclan storylines have been consistently gender critical (the Moclans being the ultimate misogynistic patriarchy, a male supremacy enforced by transing female children) but this week’s episode was outstanding.

And I’ve never heard Dolly Parton’s 9-5 quoted with such passion!

Excellent, I’ll look forward to that. I thought there was a little wink to us in the last episode as well- just a few little lines about how someone’s colleagues shouldn’t be obliged to perpetuate lies indulge his delusions. Subtle, but it was definitely there.

Seth MacFarlane gets it I think. He was the one who made the comments about Weinstein before anyone else when hosting the Oscars.

It’s on Fox. Unfortunately they only have the two most recent episodes available on Catch Up.

It might appear as a Sky boxset sometime but I don’t think it will be coming to Netflix as Fox is owned by Disney and Netflix is a rival service. (This is why Netflix won’t be making any more Marvel series, Disney owning Marvel too.)

Bortus is often a figure of fun, being tricked into wearing a silly moustache or addicted to nicotine, for instance, but the episodes about his daughter and about the Moclan who finds himself attracted to women and fakes his own death have been very touching. Like the robot Isaac, he has become a fully rounded character, increasingly alienated from his own people and more attached to the crew.

It’s an affectionate pastiche of the original Star Trek and Star Trek: TNG that has some of the same people behind the scenes as well as the occasional actor.

It’s only occasionally laugh-out-loud funny but it’s good natured and - I think - on the right side of history.

The Orville runs in Parallel with Star Trek Discovery and there is a healthy debate about the relative merits. Where Disco is a big budget production with stunning visuals and an intruiguing place in the cannon, The Orville is a case of imitation being the sincerest form of flattery.

On the surface, The Orville is just silly, but the stories like the characters have subtle depth and a powerful message for our society.

It's on Fox therefore on Sky and Now TV.

He obviously loves musicals because a couple of the episodes - "Nothing Left on Earth Excepting Fishes" and "A Happy Refrain" - reference show songs in their titles.

I love both but The Orville is more like ‘classic’ Star Trek in that there is a clear moral message. Discovery is a little less direct.

Disco is dark, and very blue. It departs from the utopianism of Roddenberry and shows a Federation that can be corrupt and incompetent, whilst giving us a much more sympathetic view of Klingons.

Certainly has its problems on and off set, sounds like a car crash backstage. It is over-cast with far too many fascinating characters established then left twiddling their thumbs or gaglia or whatever appendages they twiddle. Sylvia Tilley is the nicest and most likeable Star Trek character ever, and Doug Jones gives the best performance since Brent Spiner. But oh that Burnham is a sanctimonious plank with a messiah complex. Not sure I want to follow her into the 29th Century.

I enjoyed season one, but season 2 has blown it out of the water.

Her standing in front of the union and quoting Dolly was brilliant.

I’m considering buying an Orville uniform to wear to my next Star Trek convention.

On the other hand, I’m about half a season behind in Disco, and just can’t being myself to care.
