When the focus is on a woman's spending rather than a man's violence

The Daily Mail really knows no bounds of decency. This article implies Leanne McKie was complicit in chasing a lifestyle she and her husband could not afford.

Tte focus on their spending, rather than his violence is staggering.

that's awful
the article reads like a murder mystery
and why are they reporting it now?

Popchyk · 24/03/2018 15:49

It all happened after she found out he forged her signature to get a £54K loan. He was in charge of the finances.

So I'm not really seeing how she was at fault here.

He's only just been found guilty, newt. That's why they are allowed to publish the details now.

He will be sentenced next week so that's why it is news this week.

sorry, I misread it- I thought the trial was in september
sounds like financial abuse

Report

But the point is not financial abuse! The point is the Mail reports the case with the accent on her kitchen island implying she was living extravagantly.

Not on the fact of his violence. Lots of people live beyond their means. It is not a reason for murder.

the mail is blaming them both for the extravagence
my point is that their was definite financial abuse in the relationship
so i would suspect other aspects of domestic abuse also prior to the murder
it wasn't a sudden 'he snapped' murder (if such a thing exists)
it was part of a pattern of behaviour

Yes I see what you mean.
There is no excuse for this reporting.

I would suggest the headline: Woman murdered by martial arts expert police officer husband after she discovered his financial abuse.

You're absolutely right. It makes me sick.

yes, that's more like it
but I would bet there was a lot more to it than the loan, they say he contolled all the finances

Totally unbelievable and disgusting but typical I'm afraid.

I would suggest the headline: Woman murdered by man and it was actually his fault

Actually, much better article in the Manchester Evening News

He was personally in 20K in debt before they got married.

The headline is Guilty, inspector who strangled wife when she learned of his secret £54,000 loan to fund their gilded lives

I don't see your issue. The headline is quite clear what he did and that he reacted to her finding out about the fraud. There isn't any sympathy for him in the article.

The details of the debt and spending were relevant to the case. Their spending was seriously out of control but the report is not making excuses for him.

Popchyk · 24/03/2018 23:35

You seem to have missed out the first part of the headline, Lass.

I will provide it for clarity.

Police couple who paid a deadly price chasing the middle-class lifestyle they couldn't afford: Guilty, inspector who strangled wife when she learned of his secret £54,000 loan to fund their gilded lives

She didn't die because of a middle-class lifestyle that they couldn't afford.

She died because he killed her.

He didn't pay a deadly price because he didn't die.

LassWiADelicateAir · 25/03/2018 03:18

I disagree with your interpretation. The trigger which brought matters to a head was the loan - he killed her when she challenged him. "Deadly" applies to the situation.

The article was not sympathetic to him.

The Daily Male is deeply committed to the 1st rule of misogyny: Women are responsible for what men do.

Absolutely shocking headline, the Mail never fails to disappoint.

"Everything that happens to women is their own fault"

Oh, look, I just wrote the headline for every DM story about a man being violent to a woman ever.

You’re right shkrbby people who spend more than they can afford deserve to die. Let’s just execute everyone with credit card debt and get it over with.

That is not what I said. Please do not try to twist words into a narrative that you may wish to promote, if you cannot fully comprehend anothers posting. Thank you.

It doesn't need to he twisted into anything. What you said is full of assumptions and really offensive.

Of course it is twisted, and twisted in quite a disgusting manner. Otherwise you would point me to the sentence where I stated that someone deserved to die due to their debt.

@shkrbby do you find her murder tragic, or the overspend and your interpretation of her involvement in it? It's not clear.

No one knows how much she knew or whether she was totally aware of how much debt they were in. She certainly didn't know about the fraudulent loan or the other financing he was seeking to get.

This man lost control of a situation and chose to kill his wife as a response. I hope he gets a very long sentence, but I suspect not, sadly.
