On the day that (some) women first for the vote 100 years ago, the wankers are pissing me off even more than usual.

We have Owen Fucking Jones going on about the suffragettes when he's at the top of the list for advocating loss of women's rights

Lorraine has men dresses up as women celebrating 'women'

And all over the news is how far we have come, the day after Women's fucking Aid said they would employ male bodied people to act as counsellors to abused women in shelters.

Fuck the fuck off

Yep. It's fucking annoying.

(I also found it amusing that your thread sat beside this one in my app:

Women have told everyone to just fuck offwww.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3160944-women-have-told-everyone-to-just-fuck-off )

WA haven't said that at all, they're reviewing policies.

Outcome might be the same, but give them a chance.

Hirples is right about Women's Aid.

The rest is exceedingly angry-making.

Owen Jones is such a hypocrite, I wonder if he knows or somehow does the mental somersaults to hide it from himself.

As Julie Bindel said today, the suffragettes were demonised in their time. They were unnatural, unladylike etc. These two men, who have no idea what a sodding woman even is, would have been right there, demonising them for standing up for their rights, for not deferring to men.

"Lorraine has men dresses up as women celebrating 'women'"

no she DIDN'T

(I'm not doubting you, just expressing my horror)

WTAF is wrong with everyone?

It was the inclusion of men-in-dresses in relation to 100-years-women's-votes that tipped me into #peaktrans.

Courtney Act/Shane J is not a woman and has never professed to be. Im actually really disappointed that he agreed to take part in that. Sad

Owen Jones has also been retweeting Shon Fucking Faye. Who seems to have completely missed the point that 100 years ago he would have had a vote, even if he wasn't rich or over 30 BECAUSE HE IS A BLOKE.

What do these dickheads think the denial of a women's right to vote was based on ? Their 'gender identity'? Their 'inner feeling'?
Their 'ladybrain'? No it was their biology. Their female body. Their XX chromosomes. That's it, nothing more. The presence vagina, breasts, uterus meant that people thought they weren't worthy of being part of democracy. But apparently to refer to any of that stuff now is transphobic and excludes trans people. Fuck off. Are these people so hard of thinking that they can't make that connection. Do they really lack that much self awareness?

Shon, you are not the same as a BAME, disabled or lesbian woman because you are a man.

Argh!

Actually, some lower class men didn't get the vote until later did they, but Shon is posh anyway!

To be fair, I feel Shane does stand up for and speaks up about women's rights a lot. He makes an effort to find out and learn and listen. And I'd rather it was him than India for example, as Shane at least never claims to be a woman. But I do think it's inappropriate really.

I find Owen Jones' comment below Shon's especially ironic.

Does anyone else get intensely irritated by the men who keep saying "Ah, but it was only rich women who got the vote"? It's true, of course, but it's the way they try and diminish the achievement - as if it's completely meaningless, because no-one cares about rich women, do they? It was an important staging post to all women getting the vote. That's the point.

Me too! The suffragettes were despised and detested. Including by vast hordes of women. The parallels with today are blindingly obvious and entirely different to the ones that idiot OJ thinks they are.

hackman I'm actually a bit enraged that we are celebrating now. It's almost like poor women don't matter.

The absolute gall of Owen Jones commenting on this when he's leading the charge of the trans movement destroying women's rights!

Yes exactly. Given that not all men had the vote at that point, it was unlikely that the suffragettes would achieve votes for all women. Or votes for everyone, which I guess is what people expect they should have been campaigning for.

It's a bit like now when people say to women 'why aren't you campaigning for men's shelters as well as womens', or why aren't you centering transwomen in your feminism?

It's just another way of silencing women and their achievements.

It's funny actually that men like Shon Faye tend to be the ones that try to censor women about their biology because 'not all women menstruate/have vaginas/have xx chromosomes' and yet, on the issue of the suffragettes, I haven't heard any mention of 'well, not all women were denied the vote before 1918. Some trans women had it and this celebration excludes them!'
I don't know if that's because to admit that would be to admit that biology is the basis of oppression, or because celebration of the suffragettes doesn't exclude them, per se. It was 100 yrs earlier and while I imagine most of us feel solidarity with those women, I wonder if there is more of an individual element to the TRAs. It's less of a class thing.

FFS don't give them ideas. That will be the next thing. Women already had the vote..never had to fight for it, same as they have always had equal rights, stop making a fuss silly people!

It is maddening to think that 100 years ago women were denied the right to vote based on their biology. 100 years later their biology is simply denied by every party -barring UKIP.

Of course our mate Paris has also appropriated this for their own agenda. A few misogynist comments underneath as well.

I don't know if its just me, but this tweet has a distinct undertone of 'the suffragettes didn't do a very good job'. Which just confirms for me that that Vogue cover was absolutely fuck all to do with celebrating the Suffragettes and everything to do with proving how much of a 'woman' Paris is.
