No. I'd be asking his boss whether it was an appropriate comment to be making.

Not appropriate at all. Utterly shocking. I would be reporting it!

No, at all, speaking as uni lecturer myself. I would email the lecturer and say how inappropriate students thought this comment was and raise it with the Head of Department if no apology was forthcoming. Sexism is simply not on.

No - university lecturer here - that's totally shocking and almost certainly a disciplinary offence. If I were one of his students I would have no hesitation to complain to the lecturer's head of department, by email, copied to HR so they can't brush it off. And I would try to get one or two other students to join me in complaining so that there are "witnesses".

Good grief. Not appropriate anywhere.

The partner who is in charge of our diversity policy has just wandered past my desk. I'm just imagining the explosion if he heard or heard of anyone in our office talking like that. It would be a disciplinary matter.

Not OK. I would email the HoD.

Is the twist in the tale that the lecturer in question is a woman?

Unacceptable either way.

Lecturer is male. In fact it's an all male class with one exception.

Nope. He's not just an asshole, he's an unprofessional asshole.

I support the rights of university lecturers and students to explore all kinds of uncomfortable ideas - but that isn't exploring anything, just reinforcing the idea of "bitches".

Hi Fay

Since you are back from your break, what happened to the lecturer, can you say?

Are you the exception? Are you directly affected by this or is it something you heard about?

I'd think he was a sad bastard. A sad sexist bastard.

Nothing happened because I doubt anyone would have reported it. I reckon after they had a laugh they would have forgotten about it.

Well, thanks for the update.

Was there something specific you wanted from the thread? Were you in the room and made to feel unconfortable?

Report
Wackadoodle · 22/03/2015 23:38

Depends. Was the comment made during an earnest deconstruction of Gansta Rap lyrics in the "Urban Youth Linguistics" department of a trendy ex-polytechnic?

No? OK, it's just out of order then.

Before working myself into violent convulsions of foaming anti-sexist rage I'd like to know more about the exact context that statement was made and the reaction of his audience to it.

Report
fayyive · 23/03/2015 11:58

The exact context? Student with the beard walks into class late, and just as he takes his seat the lecturer who was standing close by notices and very casually makes his remark to which those around had a quick laugh about.

It wasn't in the middle of a lecture it was when the students were working on something and talking amongst themselves and the lecturer was going round checking on everyone's work.
