'Handbags at 40 paces' when spewed at footballers who are fighting in a childish way is rude to women and should be purged from football lingo. I'm not being silly and precious am i? DP and BIL think i am. A bit.

No, you aren't.

Phrases that imply that the female is to be weak, or silly, or irrational give me the fucking rage.

See also: cried like a girl, throws like a girl, etc.

Perhaps the handbags reference is homophobic rather than a reference to women. It's been around for years, when the likes of Dick Emery and his Honkytonks character was on TV.

Nope. The implication is that women, their lives and conflicts are irrelevant. It minimises and infantilises at the same time. Deeply sexist.
