No more page three - Caroline Lucas Early Day Motion - Ask your MP to sign!

Hi everyone,

I have emailed my MPs to add their support to the no more Page Three campaign by supporting Caroline Lucas' Early Day Motion to stop selling the Sun in the Palace of Westminster until they stop including Page Three. The petition text is copied below, if you support this would you please contact your MP to ask them to add their name to the Motion.

^Caroline asked the Prime Minister to get behind her campaign to see the parliamentary authorities stop selling The Sun until they drop Page 3 ? sadly he wouldn?t!

Now, she has tabled an Early Day Motion ( EDM) in the House of Commons.

An EDM is a way of asking the Government or Parliament to take action and Caroline has asked the parliamentary authorities to stop stocking the Sun until the Page 3 feature is removed.

The more MPs that add their name the more pressure is put on the authorities!

Please write to your own MP and ask for their support.

If you click on this link anyone can find out if your MP has signed already: Early day motion 253

If your MPs name isn?t there?please, please cut and paste the email below and send it to them. Or if you have more time write your own.

Dear MP,

I am writing to ask you to add your name to Early day motion 253 which has been put forward by Caroline Lucas MP, and aims to see the parliamentary authorities stop selling The Sun until they cease to show the Page 3 images.

I am a firm supporter of the No More Page 3 campaign which now has over 106,000 signatures, public backing from UK Girlguiding (500,000 members) and UNISON (1.3 million members) and active support from over 120 cross party MPs.

These pictures were introduced in 1970, an incredibly sexist era. We do not think they should remain in 2013. Children should not, when faced with this paper, see pictures of men, in clothes, doing various activities, running the country, for example and then see one huge image of a woman in no clothes, doing nothing. It sends out an unacceptable message about a woman?s place in society.

Please do add your name and let?s see an end to this sort of media sexism in our society.

Many thanks

YOU! : )^

Fab - thanks all! I have just emailed my MPs again today asking if it's just an oversight that they haven't bothered replying to my emails or signing their names to the EDM.... None of them seem like the sort who would be massively bothered about so called 'women's issues'..... But will give them the benefit of the doubt!

I have always thought of the Green party to be a bunch of lefty authoritarians. This just reinforces that view even more. And yet again i see the old objectification theory nonsense is wheeled out............yawn.

Surprised Harperson hasn't signed it yet?

I really dislike my MP. Both times I've written to him I've received rubbish replies.

It's got nothing to do with prejudice, they most certainly are lefty authoritarians. Check out their manifesto, they are economically socialist and they want to ban lot's of things with increased state control.

Hence why they are often branded 'Watermelons' as in green on the outside red in the middle.

Noseynoonoo

Of the 33 MPs who have signed
Only 1 is Conservative
And that 1 is female.

Not a stretch for OP to imagine that this will not be on the radar for a "senior" male tory.

Thanks everyone. Different politics aside I did think this was a good addition to the No More Page Three campaign mainly as I feel that casual objectification of women in 'normal' situations makes general sexism, discrimination etc harder to flag up. I don't think banning The Sun in the Palace of Westminster is going to make a huge difference but hopefully by being debated it will raise the profile of the wider campaign...

Thanks all for contacting your MPs.

I have a reply from my MP.

He's against pornography, but thinks that Page 3 isn't pornography. Hmm

There are many statues all over Europe which constitute tasteful tributes to the female form - and, indeed, to the male form - and I reckon that page 3 is more in that tradition.

Good to know that he has completely missed the point. There are no naked men in daily newspapers, in fact, you wouldn't be able to have pictures of men with their penis' on display, the uproar! Shock

I am actually disgusted with his attitude. It shouldn't make a difference, but he is the MP for a garrison town, there are women here who have in the past, and will be in the future, sent to war zones, but as long as we can see tasteful tributes to their tits, it's all ok.

I want to reply, but I am so bloody angry about his slimy response I don't feel I will do myself or this subject any good. Is this level of rage normal? Am I being irrational? These are all quite new feelings for me, not having dealt with much in the way of misogyny before this year. Any advice for a new fledged feminist who has steam coming out of her ears?

Done. Mine is Conservative, so I have pointed out that only one Conservative has signed so far, and asked him whether he has had any guidance on this motion from anyone other than his constituents. Fairly confident he won't tell me. His replies from my previous questions to him have not bothered actually answering my question.

I take back my 'defence' of the Conservative MPs.

My Conservative MP says:

I understand your point.
Ministers have convened a group of experts to identify non-legislative solutions to tackle causes of low levels of body confidence
The Government publishes a newsletter on body confidence
but,

'I cannot support...a ban on page 3... as it is not for the Government to legislate in such instances but rather up to the newspaper involved to take the best course of action.

Am bumping this as It's been a good day for no more page 3 as The Irish Sun has made a step in the right direction by dropping topless photos (unfortunately only to replace them with women in bikinis).

It could be a good day to email your MPs (again) encouraging them to sign the petition...?

And we're not asking for a ban remember! We're asking for a show of hands so The Sun drops page 3 itself.

You are correct, there are no naked men in daily newspapers just as there are no naked women in daily newspapers unless page 3 now includes women displaying their vaginas?

What you wouldn't see is topless women on daytime TV, or in diet Pepsi adverts.

Thank you, also done.

I have a female Labour MP so I am hoping for a positive response!

Good luck every one
