Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I think this is brilliant. And simple.

Hey baby. A video game in which men approach women, introduce themselves and get shot by the women. There are other ideas in there too, but that one struck me the most.

Sorry I don't like this, transpose the storyline where men approach women and shoot them if they say no. This board would rip the game apart, I don't like double standards. If you are against violence this is not good it is sick.

Why do you think this is brilliant?
Hmm
It's just as bad as any other denigrating game. But then, I dont find violence and assault amusing in any situation.

I was typing a longer response about the other empathy exercises and how the game comes across etc but then I realised this was not ever intended as discussion was it? So there is no point.

I'd read the article first...as it's not designed for women. It's designed for men to inspire a little empathy...though I still disagree with it

sausage that wouldn't be the swap though would it? You would have to transpose it so men are approached by women and can shoot them if they aren't interested.

Did you read the article? The game doesn't seem to be that you have to shoot the men, you have a polite response option as well. Men are supposed to play it, rather than women, and it was designed so that men realise that a polite 'no thank you, have a nice day' doesn't really cut it when men are more agressive in their 'advances' than just an introduction and an offer of a drink. Apparently it is clear in the game that violence doesn't work either, so the player comes to realise that there isn't any solution that fits all situations, and there isn't anything you can do to stop the advances coming, you just have to deal with each incident as it happens.

That was my understanding from reading the article anyway. I haven't played the game, and would be interested to play it just to check whether the article has represented it correctly.

Also from that article:-

This is not the only empathy-building exercise used to teach men to critique street-based sexual harassment. One particular sexual ethics program directed at football players asks them to write on whiteboards what they do each day to avoid being sexually harassed. Most stand around scratching their heads.

Random women are then brought into the room and asked the same question. Furious scribbling ensues. "I stand at the back of the lift to avoid being pinched on the bottom." "I sit in the back of the taxi and pretend to be on a mobile phone." "I always scan the train carriage and try to sit with women." "I wear baggy jumpers and pants when walking my dog ? even in the heat of summer." And on and on it goes.

This, I think, is a great way we can show our young men the effect their behaviour has on all women. My daughters often express disgust at the comments made at them by men and boys who probably don't think they're doing any harm.

I didn't see the deleted comments but judging by the usernames behind them I presume they're MRAs.

I don't condone violence, having been on the receiving end in a relationship. I thought it was an interesting idea, one that could appeal to the younger generation, especially those who are gamers.

Nick, I think your OP didn't quite represent the article - plus I originally thought it linked directly to a version of the game so didn't click the link till it was further described.

I think the football player exrecise is an interesting one.

Why is a poster with the name of keepcalmandcarryonraping even allowed to post?

Why hasn't he been banned completely?

I think he keeps name changing from similarly offensive names, FB, and probably from different IP addresses.

Why does MN allow names of the sort that got amazon into trouble to exist? This is a site to make parents' lives' easier and for some people seeing a name like that presumably really doesn't.

The link in the op is fantastic. I think perhaps some posters haven't read the article. Please do, it's interesting.

And, no, it doesn't work in reverse, because women do actually die or are seriously injured when they say no to men. The most dangerous time for women in abusive relationships is when they leave ie when they say no, enough is enough.

They'd have to do a retrospective namechange eg to "offensivename47" - I assume they're on it!
