Why dont we kick up the same amount of fuss about male circumcision???

Because we are feminists and like to concentrate and focus on women and the very real issues that affect them. I think you'll find the rest of the internet will be happy to discuss male circumcision and the topic certainly comes up more regularly on MN than FGM.

Vezzie, thanks for the video link. Really interesting.

The bit where the father said "I'm thinking if she gets cut and married off we will get the cows to educate her brothers" was so sad beyond belief. It explains everything really.

sigh Why don't we kick up the same fuss about male circumcision?

Maybe because it isn't a means to control? Maybe because it doesn't affect labour and childbirth...along with urinating, monthly cycles, intercourse...you name it!!

And maybe, just maybe, we are SICK of it always being about men when WOMEN are the ones who really need our care and attention!

We don't kick up the same fuss about male circumcision because it is not such a big deal. I'm sorry, but it's just not.

I'm not saying circumcision is right, or that it should be accepted. But it can't be compared with fgm. If we had to make a comparison (and why should we) fgm would be equivalent to cutting off a boy's penis. All of it, with no good reason.
