Can I take anything to make my period stop?

The joys of perimenopause! After about 3 months without a period, I went to the GP and she said it sounded like perimenopause. Not ideal at 42 but other than that I had no other symptoms and 3 months without a period isn't too bad. However the day after I saw her my period started, and it's still going strong 2 weeks later! The bleeding isn't any heavier than it would normally be on days 1-2 of my period but it's just taking forever to finish! I don't have cramps and don't feel overly tired, just annoyed. I have some period delay tablets left over from last year (checked the expiry date and they're fine) so I'm wondering if taking them would make it stop? Then again it would probably start up again the moment I stopped taking them so I'd be back at square one.

(I know there was a MNetter who posted about heavy and prolonged bleeding a couple years ago who turned out to have sepsis but I really don't think that's the case with me - my bleeding is nowhere near as heavy as what she described and I don't have any of the other symptoms she had either.)

What have you got - Northisterone? Don't you have take those before your period starts?

Yes, that's what I have but I think you're right. I thought it might slow down bleeding or something but I guess not. Sigh. It's not showing any sign of easing up and feels like I've been on day 2 of my period for about a week :(

Norethistsrone now won’t help much and even if you take it before a period to delay it can cause heavier bleeding when your period does come.
It might be worth considering a mirena which would probably settle the bleeding, cover you for contraception and if you decided to go down the HRT route later you’d have lots of options for oestrogen tablets / patches / gels.
May be worth going to see your GP, especially if your next period is also long or heavy.

My SIL had the Mirena and had a period for 3 months! I was on the Pill when I was younger but went off it about 6 years ago.

Yes you can, I'm not sure what it is, but my friend gets tablets from her GP that can stop her having a period.

I got the merina coil fitted for heavy periods and they stopped it also help with symptoms of the menopause

I had a period that lasted 16 days a while back (reason unknown). I was prescribed tranexamic acid to reduce the bleeding. I don't think it's meant to stop the bleeding but after a few days of taking it (you can only take it for 4/5 days as it works by clotting the blood) the bleeding reduced and eventually stopped. If you can get to the GP they might be able to prescribe it for you. Or possibly even if you can get a telephone appointment.

I think a visit to the GP next week is in order if it hasn't finished by then, and I'll ask about tranexemic acid. I heard that you can get it OTC but the one on prescription is more effective.

It's been 4 weeks now 😭 A week ago I thought it was finishing but it's still dragging on, though much lighter than it was in the first couple of weeks. I have an appointment at the GP next Friday but just want it to be over!
