Anyone read this? Quarter of way through and really struggling. Need a quick course in religion during Tudor times before beginning! Not only that, but I keep reading it as though its set in Victorian times, so hard to imagine Tudor England. Is it worth continuing?

its the 4th book in the series, So Shardlake's character would have been developed quite a bit. I havent got to Revelation yet but have read Dissoloution (which explains the religious side) and the first 4 chapters of Dark Fire.
Brief religous history. When henry VIII wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon the pope wouldn't allow it so he broke away from the catholic church and instated CofE. Everyone had to follow this religion monestaries were torn down some monks were hung at Tyburn other took the oath to tghe church of england.

Hm, so starting on the 4th book was a very bad idea!

I really enjoyed it but I'd read all the others first. I'd say it was worth sticking with.

I love the series, though I haven't read Revelation yet. This is one series that must be started at the beginning. Try Dissolution, it really is good.
I have heard that Revelation is not the best of the series, and that C J Sansom may not write any more Shardlake books. Don't know how far that is true though

Is winter in madrid a Shardlake book or is it a completely unrelated book by CJ sansom

I've just given up on it about 50 pages in -- it's so clunkily written, couldn't be bothered.

What a shame if it's the last Shardlake. I've loved them all although haven't read the first.

Winter In Madrid is not a shardlake book, it's still a mystery (I think), it just doesn't have matthew s in it
