please help me find the title of this book so I can read it again!

All I remember is a dad dies and becomes a dog. I know this is pretty lame but it was many years ago.......I think the book was written around 70's/80's. Don't laugh, it was a thin paperback.......

Yes, Fluke by James Herbert. Used to make me cry when I read it when the dog/dad couldn't be part of the family any more.
