PS - no Lord of the Rings gnome type stories, no sci fi and nothing overtly chick lit.

I love Lee Child, Harlan Coben, Dennis Lehane, Robert Crais, Janet Evanovich, Kathy Reichs, early Patricia Cornwell (before she went all weird) and Marian Keyes.

Adele Parks is good. Mohsin Hamid's The Reluctant Fundamentalist is fantastic.

The 44 Scotland Street series by Alexander McCall Smith are very gentle, enjoyable books - I get so involved with the characters I hate when the end comes.

The People's Act of Love is also quite good.

Of my recent reads I can recommend "the seance" (a good ghost story set in Victorian times)
