What we're reading

Finished V for Victory by Lissa Evan's. Loved it. Is there anything comparable?

I have just finished V for Victory, the third in a series. I loved it, I loved all of them. Yes, I did twig a couple of plot aspects but it didn't matter because I liked the characters and the story. And yes, it was a bit cosy but there were wonderful descriptions and turns of phrase and some very funny bits.
I raced through and now I'm sad it's over.
Does anyone know of any novels that are similar - quiet but well written, everyday events, great characters that you root for, funny bits. I also like Beryl Bainbridge if that helps, but haven't been so keen on other Lissa Evans novels. Our Finest Hour and a Half was fun but not in the same league for me. I just think Noel, Mattie and Vee are great characters.

Lissa Evans is great and hits the same spot as Kate Atkinson for me. Have you read Life After Life and A God in Ruins?

No I haven't. Kate Atkinson is on my reading list though as she was recommended to me in feminist chat too. I have always had an aversion to her for some unreasonable reason but seems I really must give her a go. Thanks!

Kate Atkinson's books include the Jackson Brodie series which aren't my favourite, and the historical novels which I love. Behind the Scenes at the Museum was her first book. I think it's brilliant, but lots of people I know didn't get on with it. I'd maybe try Life After Life for a Lissa Evans style fix.

Another book that I remember from ages ago and fits a similar mold is War Crimes for the Home by Liz Jensen. It's been a while since I read it so I might be wrong but I remember it was full of quite dark humour and I really liked it at the time!
