Recommendation for book on dogs for kids????

My 10 year old son is a good, but reluctant reader. He says he hates reading but does read every night - a habit we have encouraged from an early age. He is most likely to pick up a David Walliams or non fiction text and is currently very excited at the prospect of getting a dog. So I am trying to find a good read about dogs to go in his stocking that he will find interesting and want to read. Any ideas??

Red Dog by Louis de Bernieres. It's rather sad at the end but a fantastic read.

This is probably not what you had in mind, but I thought I"d put in a good word for Albert Payson Terhune. He was famous for his dog books, especially short stories, around the 1920s. They're written for adults, but I started reading them when I was probably around 9 or 10, and I have to say that I learned a lot of new words in the process!

They're mostly out of print, of course, so you have to take whatever you can find.
