Read St Mary's now what?? - holiday reading

Off on hols next week and need to load up my kindle. I'm after something light and funny like St Mary's but no chick lit - I can't stand reading about shopping, clothes, cupcakes or silly girls. I'm not keen on gritty murder/detective novels either so what should I read???

I was going to suggest Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch, which would fit the bill I think, but they are murder/detective stories.

Oh thanks those look interesting -its the grim, miserable murder/dectective stuff don't like.

I like Ben Aaronovitch's sense of humour, and that's what keeps me reading them. They're not grisly but there are a few unpleasant bits - he writes for Doctor Who so that kind of thing really.

The Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde is excellent.

I am re-reading St Mary's at the moment - love it! Second the recommendations of Jasper Fforde and Ben Aaronovitch- they are both great.

I have just finished the first two books of The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman which were good and I also enjoyed The Hidden Academy series so they may be worth a try.

Another vote for Ben Aaronvitch and Jasper FForde here. And there's always Terry Pratchett (the witches books are good as are the guards books if you haven't come across them before.

I loved The Night Circus and the Paper Magician if you're looking for something slightly different - both v easy to read

Watching with interest... Have also finished st marys series and paper magician one and now need more! But am also not a fan of detective stories. Plus I have a kindle voucher to use this month.

Kage Baker - the company series. Also time travel, very sharp and funny.

Yes to Ben A. Love them, and a bit different to a lot of fantasy genres.

I also love, love, love both the Kate Daniels 'Magic Bites' series by Ilona Andrews (now up to about 8 books and multiple short stories) as well as the Charley Davidson books (just reading book 10) by Darynda Jones.

Both v funny. Extremely strong female lead characters and interesting takes on old concepts.

Have you already tried Tom Holt? His books are quietly comical. As I'm also a fan of St Mary's, you might share my love of his books.

Thank you to nythbran for recommending Kage Baker. I found the Garden of Iden really entertaining. Sky Coyote is a bit expensive, so I'm going to wait and see if the price goes down.
