What is this book?

Can't remember name or author of this book- can anyone help?

There's a novelist in it and he writes some kind of short story or short novel in which probability plays a large part - his girlfriend is much better at maths than him and she realises that he's fundamentally misunderstood the concept of probability, but she can't tell him in case he is angry that she's cleverer than him. I think it's set in the 40s. I think it ends up with him writing some book about their lives together and then leaving her, leaving the manuscript on the kitchen table.

Not much to go in I know!! It's annoying me that I can't remember the name of it!
