Winner of last year's Booker Prize, written by 27-year-old Eleanor Catton. It is the story of a murder, theft, and intrigue in New Zealand during the gold rush of 1860s. Beautifully written and really well-conceived. I loved it.

I don't understand the horoscope bit at all, love the book, though.

I didn't understand the horoscopes either. In fact, I found the whole book quite confusing and never really grasped what was going on.

I think I understood it all. I tought the plotting of the story was brilliant.
dp's great-great-great (not sure how many greats) grandfather was the mayor of Queenstown around that time and I'm picturing him like some of the people in the book.

I think I understood it all, too, except the horoscope bits. I'm not sure why those were in the book and can't imagine the story losing anything if they were omitted.

I loved how the chapters kept getting smaller and the book ended with the very night when the whole story started.

It did give the book the feeling of sort of petering out rather than ending.
I want to know what happened to Walter Moody, he just wanders off into his future. I know he is fictional and he has no live outside the book but what happened to him? I grew rather fond of him throughout the book.
