The Book Thief

I've just started this book, been looking forward to reading it for ages. Finally collected it from the library on Friday.

Anyway, I find the style really odd and hard to follow - as I say it's early days but I wondered whether anyone else had found this and carried on and it got easier??

It just seems really disjointed... please tell me it either improves or you get the hang of it because I so want to read it and enjoy it!!

Keep reading - you'll get used to the style.

I'm only at page 60, so I think I need to try and stick with it!

Keep going, it does get easier. A friend lent me her copy and I felt obliged to read it but found it hard going to start with, but it did get better.

Yes, persevere! I wasn't sure to start with but I soon got into it and I truly loved it. Some of the writing is eye-wateringly good. Please don't give up yet!

Glad it's not just me who found it a bit odd to start with! I am an avid reader, read loads of different things but the start of this just threw me.

I really liked it but found the first 30 pages rather hard work. Lots of people on here hate it but I thought it was well worth reading.

Imho it doesn't improve.

It depends on what you like to read, obviously, but I found it too superficial - a "1st book on the Holocaust" for teenagers. Not to mention "Death" who annoyed me to no end with its moronic droning on about the color of this, the color of that.

I liked Death - but not as much as Pratchett's Death!

Cote - come and talk to me about Moby Dick.

Oh do stick with it. I think it's a brilliant book. Smile

I don't know about Pratchett's Death, but even Lestat in Interview With The Vampire was a much better eternal-predator-ruminating-about-human-affairs than Book Thief's Death.

I haven't read Moby Dick. I have it on my Kindle and started reading it a while back but then got bored got hooked on another book.

I'll read it soon, but probably not in the next four weeks. I have two books to read for two book clubs until the beginning of May, after I finish the one I'm currently reading.

I found it incredibly slow and boring.
Much as I desperately tried to enjoy it after various recommendations. It took me 4 months to (painfully) get to page 430 and I've just given up.

I really wanted to like this but I can't persevere any longer Sad

Urgh I hated, 'Interview With A Vampire.' 'Moby Dick' v boring a lot of the time with a few really good chapters. But I had vowed to finish the damn thing, so finish it I did. I feel like I should get a prize tbh.

Well, I am now half way through, eating up the pages!!!! Got up early thsi morning especially to get an hour's reading in before DC got up. Still finding the style and subject matter at odds to an extent, but I've got the hang of it.
