Simon Scarrow "Eagle" series - OK for 13 year old?

DS (13) loves all things Roman/classical mythological. He has done Eagle of the Ninth and the sequels, the Simon Scarrow Gladiator books for younger readers, all the Percy Jacksons etc. I was wondering if the adult Scarrow books about Cato and Macro would be OK for him or are they full of rape and pillage?

Katisha - yes, I'd say so. Like your DS I love anything to do with the ancient world. Has he read the Gladiator series specifically aimed at adolescents? (it's a sort of Hogwarts for gladiators!)

They are huge and incredibly heavy but I don't think you get much better than Colleen McCullough's Masters of Rome series. Other ones that might be a slightly easier read for him are Steven Saylor's mystery series set in ancient Rome and Robert Harris Imperium and Lustrum.

Hope this helps! Long live fans of the ancient world!

Oh thank you! I will look up all of those!

I'm afraid I'd say no, Katisha, to the adult Scarrow. They have isolated graphic sex scenes which wouldn't be good for ds at 13.
