Advice on carbs

Hi all

I wondered if someone could give me some advice about what carbs (if any) I can eat. I really want to lose weight and I am currently trying to decide the best way to do it. At the start of the year I was told I was prediabetic and encouraged to give up all carbs. A later blood test put me in the normal range so I'm not sure how big of a worry this is. I don't that many carbs anyway - don't like rice or potatoes, already replace pasta with courgette but I do like couscous and wholewheat bread with scrambled egg for breakfast - can I have these or not? Not sure whether I need to cut them all out for could weight loss or what amunt is ok?

Many thanks

xx

Watch the BBCs programme The Truth About Carbs that was on last night.

They had a group of type 2 diabetics showing them what to eat, so perfect for you I think?

I do low carb, The only starchy carbs I have is one slice of bread at breakfast (unless I’m on a cheat day!). Try The Blood Sugar Diet, lots of recipes also To, Kerridge Dopamine diet is a good one. I was told avoid starchy carbs after lunch but I just have them once a day.

Thank you for the replies. I will watch that programme, it sounds like it will be helpful! It sounds like the odd slice of toast for breakfast might be ok though!

Also research the Ketogenic diet.

By the way if you really love toast, try Burgen bread which is soya and linseed and lower carb.

Did you cut down on carbs before the later blood test? A couple of weeks of strict low carbing can have dramatic results on your blood sugar levels.

I think some people can get away with the odd slice of bread or spoonful of couscous. I can't. IMO if you are going to add some carbs you have to keep an eye on calories. The Blood Sugar Diet has moderate carbs but works because you only eat 800cals a day.

As well as Burgen there are other high protein low carb breads making it onto the supermarket shelf. You can also make your own low carb bread.

I would try and cut carbs down to 20-30g a day for a while and see how you feel. It should have a dramatic effect on your hunger levels and you may feel that cutting the carbs is worth it to experience this. You will probably feel a bit yucky for a few days. (google carb flu).

It doesn't suit everybody but why not give it a try.
