Anyone else newly diagnosed diabetic / GD?

Just been diagnosed with GD and this now puts me at much higher risk of type 2 within the next 5 years.

I have a massive sweet tooth not touched anything for a few days now and non pregnant I adore red wine.

Looking to make long term changes and appreciate any words of wisdom.

ETA: first step is to control through diet and I'm checking blood sugars after every main meal.

Am cursing my years of not taking care of myself, although I did follow a low GI plan pre DC so am not completely in the dark with it all.

GD is usually temporary whilst pregnant. Yes it does put you at higher risk of getting type 2 diabetes in later life but if you avoid the risk factors (bad diet and being on the higher end of BMI etc) you can lower the risk. As part of having GD you will meet a dietician who will go through a healthy diet, ways of maintaining your blood sugars. It is important to exercise and get enough sleep. Unfortunately, cakes, sweets and high carb foods have to be limited with diabetes but if you heed the warning (GD) and change your lifestyle you could avoid type 2. I hated the "diet" and definitely didn't want to be stuck on it for life so it was a big wake up call for me. The high fat diet will depend on your weight and health. I was within 'healthy range bmi' and was advised to use low fat foods and eat more protein (Mediterranean style diet). I think there are support threads on the pregnancy board to get tips.
