Preparing for Bariatric Surgery(5 Posts)
Hi there, I have been on waiting list for gastric for 6 months. Have been advised wait is 6-8 months and that I must do a Liver Reduction Diet for 6 weeks before op. So if op is Nov I could get call mid Sept onwards. I have felt in limbo for ages. I pat the initial 5% required to be accepted for Surgery and have remained pretty constant but have gained 6 pounds on holiday which I need to get off asap.
One lady that I know is doing Slimfast. I've considered Weight Watchers and Slimming World doesn't work for me. I definitely need to get into the zone of being more mindful of what I eat and starting to get into good habits. Any advice at all?

You are so right about the mindset thing - need to line up something that absorbs your attention and occupies your mind to fill all he gap that up to now (I'm guessing?) food/eating has. It doesn't matter what that is so long as it works for you (obvs ideally not smoking). Pay special attention to your danger times (eg evening ad breaks) make sure you have diversion tactics in place for these.
In terms of appropriate pre-op diet - Dr Michael Moseley's Blood Sugar Diet (a very sane very low carb and healthy way of eating) can both give you the targeted results your GP is looking for in the six or so week run up while really getting the pleasure of healthy eating into a habit. Go spend some time on the 'BSD' chats under the. ".... Fasting / 5/2 ". category above. Really friendly and supportive ... could take you towards your surgery date feeling much more empowered and positive about your 'post op' eating behaviours than a powdered sachet regime could.

Congratulations to being so near what I today heard in a radio program mentioned as the only workable long-term solution (gastric bypass), a number of doctors discussed. Other than that they mentioned starting off eating low-calorie food replacement shakes and only slowly introducing "normal" eating habits. So, I suppose that one conclusion could be to start with the low calorie food replacement shakes that health professionals recommend.
I did the liver reducing diet before my surgery - I did milk and yogurts only for two weeks. I found it depressing but easy, I could eat as much yogurt as i liked and drink milk, Bovril and water.
One thing I would recommend is to have a Last Supper before you start on the liver reducing diet. Go out for a meal and have your death row dinner, because it's possible that you won't be able to eat the same things post surgery or in the same quantities, which can be difficult to come to terms with. I made an occasion of my last supper and went out with all my family. Good luck!
Thanks all. I've finally got into the mindset! A combination of watching the Lisa Riley baggy body club, meeting a friend on same position for coffee and DH giving me gentle kick up the bum has helped! I've been doing Slimfast and it's helped to shift some pounds already!
