Anyone else experienced negativity about their weight loss?(11 Posts)
Is this common? I have a friend who says this is but wanted a wider opinion.
I have been trying to lose weight since xmas, crept up to 11 stone from 9 stone over the past two years and finally cracked when the last of my stretchy jeans felt so uncomfortable.
I have now managed to lose nearly 2 stone, so nearly all i had put on.
People's reactions have been quite surprising. I'm not after any approval from others, its about how i feel really. I'm just surprised how negative people have been to me about it, family, colleagues etc.
is this the norm?
From my experience, a resounding yes! Jealousy perhaps? They like having friends who look not quite as slim as them? Well done to you and that's a great achievement
My dad told my mum she was going to end up looking ''too thin' (this was when she had gone from 15 to 12 stone and was aiming to lose maybe one more?)
Because obviously she is aiming to lose weight purely to aesthetically please him/the world rather than to live a long and healthy life with (or without....) him sarcasm alert
Yes I find it usually goes along the lines of 'wow you look great' to begin with to 'don't lose too much now or you'll look too thin/gaunt/old/tired etc'. I think it's just a bit of jealousy mixed with the general idea that it's ok to comment on other people's bodies (it's not. IMO)
Yes I had negative comments but were from both men and women. Women who were maybe insecure and men who preferred curvy women. They never bothered me though as I felt good. Thankfully never get any comments now I'm fat! (phew)
I've lost nearly 2 stone, gone from a size 14 to 10/12. MIL has been telling me not to lose any more in case I end up looking gaunt and ill. I'm pretty much where I was when I married her son. I don't think there's any harm in it, she's just got used to me being a bit podgy. Still slightly dispiriting though when I feel that I look better than I have in years.
Yes, about 5 years ago I lost about 3.5 stone ( put it nearly all back on now) .
The comments from some of my colleagues were shocking - too thin- face looks gaunt- stop now.
Yes definitely common. I lost 6 stone 4 years back and had all of that. I've been slimmer for so long now that when illness forced me to put 4lbs, yes 4lbs!, on people were commenting about my weight gain ffs. Partly is jealousy, sometimes is comes from a place of eating disorder concern but often it's just that you tend to lose quicker on a diet than you gain it in the first place so can shock people.
Well done btw
DH told me not to get to thin. This was when I had gone from a size 22 to a size 16. I was surprized really. He said he prefers curves. Well I am still curvy but I feel much healthier and fitter and my confidence is better because of that. Whether I will lose anymore weight I don't know but I do know I am starting to really enjoy exercise and love having muscles and feeling strong.
I do think most comments come from people's reluctance to accept changes. I saw a fb post this morning where a person was bewailing the new pound coin coming out because of all the changes in the world. < eye roll >
I wonder if people who have been slim all their life have to put up with comments like these?
I've had lots of comments having lost 2 stone and going from a 16 to a 12, even from people who knew me 20 years ago when I was a 12 (probably a 10 by todays standards).
Why is it ok to say to a size 12 woman, don't get too thin, you look gaunt/ ill, you're stopping now right? But same people would not dream of vocalising to a size 16 woman don't get too fat, you look chubby/unhealthy, you're going to stop overeating now right?
I've lost 5 stone and have to say the comments from work colleagues and all but one so called friend has been amazing. Don't get me wrong I have about 3 stone more to go. When I'd lost about 4 stone the so called friend called and I was standing up next to the radiator in the kitchen. She was wear a big winter coat so I didn't notice her 2 stone weight loss, so didn't mention it. As she was leaving she said aren't you going to mention my weight loss. I said oh god sorry yes you look amazing your face looks so slim..... then I said it's a great feeling isn't it I've lost 4 myself to which she sniggers no way have you lost 4 stone you're kidding yourself, you don't look any different.
I know I looked different I heard it from everyone else.
She has since put it all back on and I met her last week in the street while I was out exercising actually and all she did my moan about how hard weight loss is. I think it's killing her I'm doing it all without joining a slimming group. It's made me more determined to keep going.
