I'm 2 weeks into dry January, and training for a half marathon. My diet has always been pretty healthy (although portion sizes could be reduced) so I've not made any massive changes there except for cutting out alcohol (big drinker) and some of the poor food choices that might go with that (take-away on a Friday if didn't feel like cooking, that kind of thing) and have massively increased exercise from nothing to 2 short runs a week, 1 long run and cross training twice a week. So how is it, when i stood on the scales this morning, they laughed in my face and told me I had lost NOTHING!! NADA!! Feeling slightly disheartened! Please tell me I'll lose some eventually!! Sad

I could be wrong but I think your muscles retain water when you exercise so maybe it's just taking a while for the scales to catch up. Keep up the good work and make sure you are getting enough water in too.

Unfortunately it is extremely difficult to lose weight by exercise alone. For example if you need 2000 calories to stay the same weight, but eat 2500 calories and burn 300 calories (difficult) through exercise you are going to put on weight. Tis a bummer.

I trained for the London Marathon a couple of years ago - followed quite a rigid training plan from Boxing Day to the run in April. There were 4 runs each week (2 x 5 miles and 1 x 8 miles) and then a longer run at the weekend - very quickly in excess of 10 miles building up to about 22 miles). I also cut out some ofthe red wine, and didn't snack. I did have more carbs that I probably would have, but didn't lose a single pound throughout. I was however in great shape with toned everything!

You'll probably see a difference in another couple of weeks - maybe firmer thighs / bottom (that type of thing) but perhaps not weight loss.

Thanks twobambinos, I hope so - it's quite disheartening otherwise!

woodstack - I am taking in less calories though - at least 3000 (based on a bottle of wine having 750 calories in it) if not more!

namechange - that's interesting, I had assumed I would definitely lose some just from ramping up the exercise and cutting out wine. Even with muscle weighing more than fat I was expecting to see at least some loss. I can feel myself getting more toned, so maybe I'll just have to focus on that instead.

Thanks all Flowers
