Bit confused about my weight, can anyone help?

Hi, I've been slowly dieting using fitness pal for the last few months, aiming to lose a stone and think I lost about half a stone. I had some old bathroom scales which were not too reliable (could stand on them 3 times in a row and get a different answer each time) so bought some digital ones. Got on them today and I'm a whole stone heavier than I thought, then checked ideal weight charts and it puts me firmly in the overweight section of the chart. Bit confused about this as I only thought I was a little overweight if at all, mainly wanted to lose weight for my own confidence really.
If the figures help I'm 5:2, according to new scales I weigh 10 stone. Dress size is 10-12. Only thing is that my breasts are quite large compared to the rest of me!
Can anyone shed any light on this? Heavy bones maybe??? Grin

Ooh I'm aiming for 10 stone lol. I've got quite a bit to shed after having a baby. Currently at 11stone after having lost first 10 pounds since having her.

I"m the same height as you. I know at 11 stone now I"m fat. At 10 stone I'm overweight but not particularly big. I'm best at 9 stone 7 (which is what I am aiming for)

I know some of these charts etc say that for 5'2 you should be like 8 stone something. I haven't been 8 stone since i was about 12!!! And at 9stone 7 I'm very very trim, toned and slim!

Get off the scales - go by the fit of your clothes Grin If you're only a 10-12 then you're fine. HTH.

To be honest the bmi etc charts aren't really that good for everyone - it always says I'm underweight when I'm not at all, I am just small framed the charts don't seem to account for that sort of thing and if you're a busty lady for your size that won't be taken into account either!

if you are a size 10-12 I don't think it's that likely that you're overweight! If you're only looking to lose weight for your own confidence I'd say just ignore those sort of things and just keep trying to lose the weight until you're happy with your progress!

Thanks, very sensible advice. I'm over the shock now! yes I think I will perhaps just aim to lose another half stone.
good luck with your weightloss havingastress I think I was also about 11 stone after I had DS. Nice to hear from someone the same height, I notice when I put on half a stone, whereas with taller friends that would be nothing.

If it helps, rather than go by BMI, try this simple calculator. My MiL was told by the consultant treating her diabetes to allow 100lb for the first five feet of height, then a maximum of 10lb per inch after that. At 5ft 2 your maximum healthy weight would therefore be 120lb or about 8 1/2 stone.

carabos If I was 8 and a half stone I would seriously be anorexic. So for that to be a maximum healthy weight for my height, it's bull! Not saying you're lying at all, just saying I don't agree with the professional who told your mil that! Grin

I could post a picture of me in a bikini at 9 and a half stone to prove my point - you could see my ribs sticking out, my collarbone sticking out and all my limbs were lovely and toned. Definitely a 'skinny'.

I honestly don't think weight obsession is healthy. I had a friend who was a gymnast in her youth. She has the most incredible figure. She's tiny. I would have guessed she weighed about 7-8 stone. Nothing of her. Imagine my [shock[ when she said she was 9 stone!

It's about being healthy, fit and toned.

I also know some people who weigh nothing and are flabby as hell and unfit.

Build has a lot to do with it imo.

OP I know! Sometimes wish I had another 3-4 inches height on me. You can't get away with anything as a shortie! I went up to 12stone7 at the end of the pregnancy, was about 11stone 10 once she'd popped out. So i've only lost 10pounds, but at least it's starting to come off now.

I am also 5 2 and pre baby was 7 stone now 8 and on my body I do look 'rounder' than I want to be.. I have no tits or shoulders either so think just go by what you look like and feel comfortable :) my mum says when she gets to 9 stone she isn't comfortable as she does admittedly not that I would tell her look 'chubby' so her ideal weight is 8-81/2

By no means am I saying if you above this your fat by the way! Different people different shape weight etc :) Smile

If it helps, I'm 5'3" and a bit and I find my ideal weight is 9st4lbs (not there right now though) which for me is BMI 22.7, any less than that and I look gaunt. I too am rather busty, even when at my slimmest, but I don't think that's what it's down to.

I was always slim to skinny as a child, only having weight issues as an adult, but I nearly give a hernia to anyone who tried to pick me up as I've always been a lot heavier than I look. I don't have particularly big bones either, rather petite really. Just more solidly constructed than some I guess.

To think that I could be 7st8lbs and still be BMI normal seems utterly ridiculous, but then there are people who look a bit blobby with a BMI of 22 or over, whereas if mine is less than 22.5 I look malnourished. We all come in different shapes and sizes!

I am 5'2, 8 stone and I am not skinny or anorexic. I am slimmish, but heavy thighs, and I have some muscle too. I can wear anything from a 6 to a 12, depending on where I shop, so I don't think dress size has much to do with it.

Definitely agree about BMI charts being a bit dated and not taking into consideration people's individual composition (fat/muscle), e.g. a super healthy body builder with a high muscle mass would be considered obese according to these charts or to the above mentioned consultant....

I too am a shortie (only just under 5'2) and when I got to 8 1/2 stone (through serious dieting and a LOTS of excercise), I felt ill, bones sticking out everywhere, and despite beinng very muscular and fit, I had so called "lollipop head look" and close people to me got worried. I would have only been able to maintain this weight through severe calorie restriction (say 1000 kcal a day!).... 9 and a bit stone is more managable and I feel and look much healthier (still very slim)

It really is very individual. I came accross this website the other day, where you can check photos of real women - just search for the height and weight and you will be surprised at the variety of shapes within the same height and weight range:

Wow, that website is really interesting, there is certainly a big variety. I must say that while 8-8 and a half stone seemed a good idea in my mid 20's I might be in agreement with my mother that as a lady gets older she needs to round out a bit! Think I'd be happy with 8 and half to 9.
Thanks for sharing your measurements with me everyone, it's helped!

Agree we are all different. I am 5ft5 (so not even that short) and feel a bit chubby at the moment at 8st7, I am a size 10 (vanity shop 8 sometimes) and have a 27/28 inch waist so not skinny. Am 38 and have had 2 kids, but cause I am small boned don't get away with extra weight easily, that said under 8st looks too skinny (so I have been told by people and ages me) so very hard to get the right balance. Hate dieting and being hungry with a passion, but determined to drop a few pounds.

I'm 5'3" and nearly 12 stone but was 10 stone for many years at my lightest I was just over 9 stone and really without starving myself and working out continually that is a light weight. 10 stone was acceptable to me but I wasn't trim - yet I have a square physic so little boob and no waist (not shapely).

If I was 10 stone again I'd be very happy but would spend more time getting toned and shapely. My BMI makes me obese.

Wish I was a size 12 at 11 stone. Now at nearly 12 stone I am more 16-18.

bacon Bodyshape plays such a huge part doesnt it. I am short waisted so my tummy always looks huge and the c-section overhang doesnt help either. Im lucky that i have shapely but slim hips. Fit is the new thin apparantly so im going to try and bench press DS later!

I too am 5'2. I'm about 12 1/2 stone. It's been very easy to eat slightly badly and load on the pounds! My goal is 9 1/2. I'm very pear-shaped and have always been heavy. It's true some of us do weigh more - People pick up my little kids and are surprised how much heavier they are than they look!

I like that calculator.. to be honest this fits in with the weights of the friends that I know (some target weights and some actual weights)
100lb if you are
5ft = 7st 2lb
5ft1 = 7st 12
5ft2 = 8st 8lb
5ft3 = 9st 4lb
5ft4 = 10st
5ft5 = 10st 10lb
5ft6 = 11st 6lb
5ft7 = 12st 2lb
5ft8 = 12st 12lb
