does diet coke rot your teeth?

I'm dieting. Have found that I can keep hunger at bay with diet fizzy drinks. But I'm worried that they may be rotting my teeth. I know that full sugar coke is terrible for you, does the diet stuff also do bad things? I'm only anticipating having to be hard core about this diet for a month or so, no more, then I can revert to normal drinks. But water just doesn't do it for me at the moment!

Diet coke is still really bad for teeth - other diet drinks less so - according to my orthodontist in the nineties anyway!

Yes. It is as much the fizz (and associated acidity) as the sugar which causeway the damage AFAIK

Yep. really bad for your teeth. And your gut. It's the acid as much as the sugar.

fizzy water? Or is that bad as well?

I doubt fizzy water is bad as it won't be acidic, but I just don't like it! (fussy, I know)

It's the carbon dioxide that is used to fizz it that causes the acidity. And as much the fizz causing acidity in the mouth than in the bottle IYSWIM.

Water will be better than other drinks tho.

If the fizz doesn't get you the aspartame will.

The acid in diet coke etc is corrosive to tooth enamel but you can minimise this by drinking a glass of water straight after your fizzy drink (this will also help fill you up).

And you'd need to drink LOADS of it (20 cans a day) to hit a dangerous level of aspartame consumption:

Drink with a straw so it doesn't touch your teeth as much?

Yes diet coke dreadful for teeth. Not a great idea either to use to suppress hunger. Try and cut down...

Psyllium husk and water should fill you up.
