I expect there will be a cooling off period. Check it out. I doubt they will have already started making it. Go there first thing in the morning, or ring them.
Worst case scenario, it's a small loss compared to wearing a dress you don't like.

I've signed a contract and it says that all sales are final etc. I'm going to phone them first thing in the morning.
I had my heart set on a fishtail but it's not. I've lost a lot of weight and want something fitted to show it off. The dress makes me look 73 not 23.

Call the shop. You have nothing to lose. If you stay with them instead of taking your business elsewhere, why would they not let you change? Next time, sneak to the shop without your mum and pick one you want.

I agree that from the photo, you could probably fine something much more flattering.

That doesn't fit you, but presumably they took your measurements and so your dress will fit and look lovely? Either way, contract or no contract, these places are all about personal service so go back in and see them tomorrow. It's not guaranteed they'll sort it, but if you don't do anything about it, it it's guaranteed they won't.

They are able to make pretty much anything I want so I'm thinking of having a look on the internet for a dress I like to show them. I'm such an uncomfortable shape it's so awkward! I wish we had just popped down the registry office in our jeans now!

I don't think that is "your" dress. You can do better. Call the shop first thing, I'm sure they could at least transfer the deposit.

When I ordered the dress I asked for the top to be a simple v neck as I feel that how it is, it is too restrictive. I love the fabric and the back of the dress is spectacular. I just need it to be more of a fish tail shape I think

Narrow the shoulder straps, take it on on the hips yet let it out a bit over the thighs, then slim the skirt so it's more of a puddle (you don't need a fishtail unless you don't plan to dance at your own wedding?) and you'll be golden.

And the dressmaker attached to the shop will be able to do all of that. Honestly, it's because you are wearing something that doesn't fit you!

But again, if you're not happy go back to them ASAP.

I loved the dress when I first tried it on months ago and refused to try anymore on. I was going to order it then but had left my purse in the house.
It looks totally different with the straps narrowed so it's a proper v neck. It looked really lovely.

if the main thing you don't like is the shape then there are wonderful dressmakers who can totally change the shape of a dress. if you are in Glasgow I'll happily recommend you an amazing lady.

is the deposit a considerable amount? if it's about the same as the cost of alterations to make it a dress you like, you might be better to write it off.

Unfortunately I'm not in Glasgow - I'm in South Wales.
I've been looking at the pictures again this morning and I feel a lot better about it. I am going to phone them this morning to discuss changing the shape or swapping it for a different dress altogether

can't see the pic on my phone so can't comment. but I bought a dress last week, off the peg. am returning it today. it's not right and I just know I won't be happy.

I think the dress is beautiful actually. It doesn't fit you properly though, so you will need alterations. Is this the sample dress? Or the dress in your closest size pre alterations?

If you would prefer something more fitted, then just talk about it when you have the alterations done, and get them to narrow the seams over the hips down to the mid thigh so it's fitted. That's basically what a fishtail is. If you want to make the shape even more pronounced you can ask them about having a fishtail petticoat underneath.

The cost of some extra alterations will pale in comparison to the cost of abandoning the dress and buying something totally different.

There are lots things which will change the dress completely once corrected with the alterations (The lace is too wide at the top of your bust and is dropping, the dress isn't sufficiently tight directly under your bust, which is causing gathering, the hemline is far too low and will need to be taken up to match your height, etc).

Overall, it's a very timeless, classic dress. Lace is very popular at the moment, and as a general rule, much more flattering than satin.

I might be biased though as your dress looks quite a lot like mine!!
