What is the funniest/most moving thing you've heard in a wedding speech?

I have to give a speech at my sister's wedding - I'm the only one from her side giving a speech. I have a massive fear of public speaking but hey ho, I'll have to think of a way to get over that. [hmmm]

What I do want to do is write a killer speech, so that I feel confident about my material if not my presentation.

What is the funniest or most moving thing you've ever heard in a wedding speech? Not looking to copy it word for word of course as this has to be personal and sincere, but looking for the kind of things that people remember.

Thanks!

There are websites with example speeches and also you can buy books of them. Not suggesting that you copy one verbatim, but it might give you some ideas?

I'm going to do a bride's speech and I'll be using this site for inspiration. There are examples of all different types of speeches and they're rated too..

My Dad started mine with "What I want to say about Mortified I could fit on a postage stamp" I was Shock then he pulled out two sheets of A4 with a big stamp printed on each.

DH's best man did a slideshow of photos of DH and it was hilarious. He had a picture for each of his 'best qualities' - what I had to look forward to - e.g. 'Fashionable' with a picture of him in a shell suit aged 8, 'great sense of humour' with a sulky picture etc. Then just ended with a traditional toast. Everyone loved it. It was short, funny, not much talking and no one was really looking at him! If you're confident with the tech or have someone to sort it all for you it could be an option, and as her sis you'll probably have loads of great photos!

Yes we went to one like that choz, went down v well indeed.

Another one that was really funny was just full of daft puns - the groom met the bride when they were both working in shoe shop (totally outing myself now!), and it was full of 'I knew we would tie the knot' 'we were sole mates' etc, which was silly but brilliant, and appealed to everyone. I think thats the hard bit - something that their mates, grannies, and kids can all laugh at.

I once heard a comedian talk about speeches (can't remember which one, sorry, I'll update if it comes to me) and he said you have to remember to play to the women in the 'audience' at a wedding. They want nice, sweet, romantic, etc. Not raucous or rude. I can't remember what his point (or joke) was, but I've been paying attention at weddings since hearing that. He was right. The best ones are just honest and genuine expressions of love.

I agree on the emotional bit - the most moving speech I ever heard was a genuine heartfelt thanks from the best man to the groom for being such a good friend, it was beautiful and much nicer than the usual lewd stories
