Weaning

Do some babies just not like baby rice? Has anyone gone straight onto fruits and veg?

Just tried ds2 on baby rice but he wasn'y very happy with it. Will open mouth for water on spoon but cried at baby rice. Ds1 loved baby rice. Don't know if I should try again or go straight onto fruit/ veg?

Yes definitely skip it - it's completely unneccessary

DS never had baby rice or purees - baby rice is disgusting stuff and not really a proper food! I did baby-led weaning which just involves giving real, normal, solid food like steamed carrot sticks right from day 1. I would whole-heartedly recommend it.

None of my children ever eat it. I think I bought it once, and they spat it out. Just go straight onto vegetables.

No need to start with baby rice. Why eat something that tastes like wallpaper paste when you could have some tasty veg!

My DS hated baby rice. I ended up doing BLW after the first 2 weeks anyway, but on day 3 I tried banana and he loved it. Day 4 I had mixed in too much EBM into the banana and thought I'd thicken it with a little baby rice - he turned it down! So yes, definitely baby rice not a firm fave for everyone - and I don't blame them!

On a more positive note, it was great for thickening up stews etc (for us, not the baby!).

there is no point in it
just give him food not wall paper paste

Yes both of mine didn't take to baby rice (whether mixed with expressed milk or formula) so we went straight to fruit & veg- carrots, butternut squash really got them going. Sometimes I'd sneak some baby rice into the veg purees but only really with DD as she needed extra calories, and quickly found ground millet, oats, quinoa more successful. Having tasted baby rice myself it's pretty vile!

Horrible stuff - DD managed one mouthful, and never touched it again. Straight to fruit and veg for us (and BLW shortly after - so much easier)

Thank you. i think i will try that tomorrow and see if that works. He just went for a bit of my banana and seemed to like it

It's vile and has no added value whatsover. Straight to veg and then fruit for us.

A little aside is that I recently had my Japanese friend and her baby to stay. They don't have baby rice in Japan apparently (well, she hadn't seen any anyway) - my pal just cooked normal sushi rice but made it extra sludgy.

Have you tasted it? It is unbelievably vile. Go for carrots, and/or banana (either mushed or BLW version), and progress from there.

We gave up on baby rice after the second attempt; he loved the veg.

DS2 hated baby rice too. We moved on to rusks and fruit mush.
Mmmmm Rusks.

baby rice isn't easily available in Europe so dd went straight onto fruit and veg. When I had it I used it as a thickener.

I tried pureed pear in the afternoon. He didn't eat it as such, he knid of just tasted a bit. It didn't make him cry. I think it's going to be a very slow process this time. Ds1 took to weaning incredibly well from the first day. I know I shouldn't but I can't help comparing. It was day 1 today so let's hope it gets better.

How old is ds2? He might not wean at the same age as ds1.
Maybe just leave and try again in a week or so...

Scrap it! We have been doing BLW for past couple of weeks and DD is loving it. No need for any yacky rice or much. Just go straight for solids IMO

Have you tasted it? It's revolting (and unnecessary). Banana is so much better in every way.
BLW makes your life so much easier and much tastier for your baby IMHO

Mine hated baby rice and baby porridge, but will quite happily eat the grown up versions. I have two packs of the powder festering in the cupboard...
