Farleys rusks?????

milkysmum · 15/08/2009 09:41

we have been doing BLW for a week or so and it's going really well. Mum brought DD some Farley's Rusks which I hadn't been to keen on trying as obviously wanted DD to enjoy 'proper food' rather than manufactured baby food howvere she apsolutley loved it! (I gave her as abiscuit to feed herself) Do any other parents doing BLW give their little one's Farley's rusks? I'm also a bit worried about the sugar content which seems quite high. DD is 6 months.

I won't let my DD have them, they are too sugary. She has Organix apple rice cakes which she loves, but they are only suitable for 7 months plus (not long though!). Fruit is much better if your DD has a sweet tooth (or a sweet gum!)

Ugh, I'd rather give them rich tea biscuits!

My ds2 is 6 months also. I am doing mostly purees for weaning but am trying to give him as much finger food alongside that as possible.
I don't give him rusks. My 2 year old has them and has since he was about 10 months. Ds2 has all the things from the Organix range like rice cakes, carrot sticks, sweetcorn rings etc. He also likes banana, melon and cucumber as snacks.
He also has breadsticks, green beans, toast and a few other bits.

Yeah like I said I wasn't keen on getting them but DD's grandparents remember giving them me and think there great!!!! DD loves a variety of fresh foods, roasted vegetable fingers being very popular aswell as frit and rice cakes. I think I'll ditch the rusks although I doubt I'll be able to stop the grandparents giving her them when she goes to stay!!! I gues the odd one now and again won't hurt????
Think I'll pick a few bit's up from the organix range and give them a go.

Maybe you could pack some snack like foods you're comfortable with so there's no need to give her rusks?
I wouldn't think one here and there would hurt, but she is your dd and needs to be treated, fed and looked after how you wish her to be. If you don't want her to have rusks, then she shouldn't have them.
If you feel very strongly, just explain that you don't really want her to have them and there is a wide selection of foods she can have in their place.

When ds1 was about 8 months, my BIL gave him a pack of chocolate buttons. I was furious becuse I'd already said he was not to have any chocolate, easter or not. If he'd be just as happy with a cucumber as with a chocolate button, he was to have the cucumber, but I was ignored.

Rice cakes are the new rusks

I let my mum give DS sweet things when she sees him. It's not much in the grand scheme of his diet! I have explained why I don't like to give them and she understands and doesn't go mad though. I do give him small pieces of normal biscuits as I think the baby biscuits are a, expensive and b, deceptive, you would think they are safe and have less sugar and nasties in, but they don't. So I just give him a small amount of an adult biscuit because I am sort of naturally more wary of the sugar content etc. And then make sure I brush his teeth

I gave DS a rusk once and said never again - the mess!!

Oh and avoid the organix rusks, they are really claggy and all the babies I know have struggled with them

They are too sugary, I don't give them to mine. Rice cakes or rich tea are cheaper and less sugary.

I eat them instead, ultimate comfort food.

I give my daughter sugar free fat free rusks. She loves them, and as everything else she eats at the moment is fresh fruit and veg, I can't see any harm in it...

The low sugar ones are loaded with sugar as well, check the label!

In the great scheme of things, as an occasional item amongst a healthy diet I don't see what is wrong with them. A bit of sugar is not the work of the devil. All day every day sugar is.

The mess they make is reason enough to ban them though

I gave both my dc rusks - I've just started doing BLW with dd (who'll be 6 months on Sunday) and she loves chomping on a rusk. I don't see what's so bad about sugar as part of a balanced diet, tbh. My ds had them, and I was very PFB about it, but it was the only thing he would eat until he was about 8 months and started eating properly. Having the occasional rusk kept the IL's off my back and I don't think very much actually went in!

I give the occasional rusk or 'baby biccie', and the odd bite of something sweet if I'm having it (rare as I usually save it for after BB's bedtime). I agree that the odd bit of sugar is OK (BB is BLW and 8 months), and also have them in the cupboard for when grandma is around (rather than sugary biccies). Organix 7 months biccies have no sugar at all and are pretty tasty. I usually nick one when he has one.

I took some apple flavour organix rice cakes to grandma's the other day in an attempt to stop her from giving him cakes/biscuits/jelly (different generation and all that) - she spread them with potted meat complaining they were too dry!!! Nice.... I am scared to think about how much salt is in potted meat!

cara2244 · 21/08/2009 20:54

In fact, I had to ask OH what potted meat was as I had no idea (being veggie and not born in the 1940s).

bertiebotts I completely agree about the Organix rusks - thought it was just my DS!! He is 9 months old and we are doing a mix of purees and finger foods but he definitely prefers finger foods and eats pretty much anything without any rouble - apart from those damn Organix rusks. He gagged on them constantly which is not like him at all!! I now mush them up with milk and give him them for brekkie until they are all used up.

Cara Potted meat on apple flavour rice cakes

Just to say - I wouldn't ever give my daughter something to eat without checking the label.

DH bought some but only because he likes them! I took one look at them and said "no; sugar" and he did that stoopid-martyr-I-can't-blardy-do-anything-right-face which I hate.

I did admittedly give DS a bit of one though. He loved it

Would deffo go for the Organix soft rusks. They are yummy. Also I buy these ridiculously expensive Peter Rabbit organic apple cookies which DS is lucky to get a sniff of coz they are possibly the nicest biscuits I've ever had!

DS has the Organix rusks, really likes them and they're the first thing we've managed to get him to eat as finger food, actually feeding himself! They make a real mess because they're so crumbly, but that makes me feel happier about the choking risk as I can see they just crumble away in his mouth - he's choked on bread before now.

them ruskits I don't rate my dd always chokes on them, I call them chokeits, rice cakes are good though.
