Question about salt

So, I know it's 1g of salt up to a year and I'm quite fastidious/neurotic about it at the moment.

However, my dad will be looking after dd when i go back to work and will have to make breakfast and lunch for her. I'm sure breakfast will be fine but I was thinking she could have things like beans on toast for lunch (easy for a 60 year undomestic bloke to make). But, even the reduced salt ones have got loads of salt in.

How much salt can they have after 1 and can anyone think of easy things a grandad can make for her?

Between 1 & 2 years of age I think it goes up to 2g - so beans should be fine. What a lucky DD to spend the day with her grandfather! For lunch, I'd do beans on toast, pitta bread, soup, cheese on toast, sandwiches, pasta & pesto- not amazingly nutritious but easy and quite filling. I also offer a variety of other things too like cheese, cucumber, tomato, ham, avocado and any fruit too.

from the Salt website

up to 1 year - 1g of salt a day (0.4g sodium)
1 to 3 years - 2 g salt a day (0.8g sodium)
4 to 6 years - 3g salt a day (1.2g sodium)
7 to 10 years - 5g salt a day (2g sodium)
11 and over - 6g salt a day (2.4g sodium)

Thankyou. I'm sure my dad will be loads of fun and has great plans for swimming, the park, painting, the beach. I'm just a bit woried about the practicalities. Bless him, he is practising with nappies at the moment but cooking is not one of his strong points

What does it actually do them? That website doesn't really say. I don't add any salt and avoid very salty foods, but I'd like to know why. [curious]

WME - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt#Health_effects - none of which I'd like to impose on my 1 year old!

No, definitely not! I just need to know why I'm doing something. I'm more efficient if I understand the reasons.

He could make omelettes, pasta and tomato + veg sauce (you could bath cook the sauce and freeze it in small pots for him), baked potatoes, sandwiches, gnocchi with peas + sweetcorn + cheese, fish fingers, meatballs.

I think it's really lazy alright, and prob full of much more crap than home made! All you need to make soup is some veggies of your choice and some stock (home made or from a low salt stock cube). Cook then blend. What could be easier?!

soup is actually a good idea for your dad sunshine. You can make it up in a big batch and freeze it so all he has to do is heat it up. DS LOVES carrot, squash and cumin soup at the min - and it's sooooooooo easy to make!
