Weaning

Is it still okay to wean?

DS is just about to turn 6 months and he has been having 5 formula milk feeds during the day. Unfortunately he seems to have developed a formula intolerance so has been prescribed and hypoallergenic formula until he has tests at the childrens hospital at the end of August.

The thing is, he's never really had many full milk feeds but recently he has been taking even less and doesn't seem to want the rest of his feed or more after his feed. He does seem hungry at the time of his feed but only has about half of it. I thought that when your baby is ready to wean that one of the signs is that baby is still hungry after their main milk feeds.

Would it still be okay to wean DS? He's showing other signs like watching intently as we eat and chewing motions.

Hiya, I don't know what the answer is and tbh I'm a little reluctant to recommend either way as he has a referral. So maybe it's a decision you have to make for yourself or get some professional help?

Hypoallergenic formula tastes vile, so that may be why he's not finishing it.

Yes, it's still ok to wean at 6 months, but avoid known allergens (inc all dairy, obv), and introduce new foods slowly, keeping a food diary, in case he reacts to something else as well.

Might be worth asking at baby clinic?
I can only talk about my ds2, he turned 6mths two weeks ago and suddenly (literally on his 6mth month!) he dropped the amount of milk he wanted. I put it down to a cough, but now he is better and he still has gone down from 5 full feeds a day to 4 feeds and most of the time he can't be bothered to finish them!

As for the weaning process, it is soooo slow compared to my ds1, ds2 will open his mouth for a few mouthfuls of weetabix or apple puree but that's it, he definitely appears to want to hold food after he had a chomp of my banana and some cheese happily (so am having to think about BLW)I can't even say it's the mouthful of weetabix that has dropped his feeds, because yesterday he was zero interested in any food but still went for some milk and slept through ok.

I'd be tempted to start introducing solids, but to go with the flow with him, it's funny when I see lots of 6mth olds on 3 meals a day because they started at 4mths, but I am doing my best not to feel uptight about it and trust ds can regulate his food intake for his needs, also found that though ds not so keen on his milk there have been moments when he got very excited over apple instead!

Avoid the allergens as mentioned and happy weaning!
