Hi, This is the first time i have used this so i may bang on a bit until i get the hang of it.
We need help, Samuel is 4 months old and a big fella at 18lb's. on advice from other people and health visitors i started to wean him last week and he seemed to really enjoy it (carrot), however i'm not sure if i have started to early as yesterday i gave him some baby rice after his milk at eleven and he kicked off big time, he cried and screamed all day and didnt feed from the breast well atall all day, he didnt sleep well either and woke at 4am for a feed which he normally doesnt do. I'm going to have a day off giving him solids today and see how he gets on. Am i doing the right thing?

Hi there,
I'm not sure I'm going to be much help to you as I started weaning DD at about 5.5 months (she's 9 months now).
Is he feeling well otherwise, could he be teething or have a cold or anything else that might unsettle him?

I generally took the lead from what DD seemed to want (as I have done since she was born re feeding/sleeping etc) and if she seemed to want more solids I gave her more solids and if she wanted more milk, she had more milk, so maybe you are right to wait if he is trying to tell you he's not happy with the baby rice.
Good luck , hopefully someone with more expericence of weaning issues will come along with more advice soon!

Just to say that you don't need to wean early just because a baby is big. If you can wait until nearer 6 months it's much easier, as there are fewer restrictions on what you can give him, he'll be able to feed himself if that's the way you want to go, and his digestive system will be that much more mature. He'll be fine on milk for a while longer.
