BLW - just started and have broccolli fear

hmm not sure if that is how you spell it but neermind.
ds1 is 26 weeks today!!! Hurrah! and since he has been grabbing food from our plates for a couple of weeks, BLW has def seemed the way to go.

I need some help to get over the gagging fear though, please. He had some broc this morning, and after a bit of uncertain sniffing launched himself upon it with HUGE excitement. And managed to chomp off quite large 'tree' bits. So much so that he filled his mouth with them, hamster style. He then started to spit some out. Unsurprisingly
But there were still some fairly biggish chunks that he seemed to have trouble getting out, and he started to look a bit wide eyed ... at which point I have to admit that I hooked the bits out with my little finger. He then threw himself at some new trees and cried when they were all mashed up and too small for him to hold.

Should I have just let him carry on getting the bits out of his mouth himself?
Ikind of guess the answer is yes, but some reassurance would be lovely.

You will get used to the gagging. Ds2 gagged more at first but now he's 7 months he rarely does as he's more used to it. Just let him get on with it imo.

I started blw with dd2 (25 weeks) a couple of weeks ago. I'd say let him get on with it himself, dd2 quickly learned to spit stuff out when she'd overloaded herself. Gagging is just part of the learning process, dd2 only did it a few times at first and hasn't done it for a few days now. She loves brocolli too and judging by her nappies a lot is going in!

biglips - thank you sweets, but I think I'm going down the no puree route and try baby led weaning.. so giving him stuff he can hold and munch on.. he seems to get really frustrated with spoons anyhow, has had some baby rice and just tries to grab the spoon all the time! so i figured i'd follow his lead and let him be in control. hopefully in a safe way

any tips on how soft should the brocolli be?

I did the brocolli very soft at first, steamed it for ages but not so much now. He loves brocolli as well.

I kept fishing food out of ds2's mouth the for first few weeks. Eventually I forced myself to stand at the other side of the kitchen and watch from a distance. The gagging stage really doesn't last long, as they learn how to manage the food better, so don't worry.

Mine's really hit and miss, I don't seem to be capable of cooking it to the same texture twice!

uber - lol at standing the other side of the kitchen. Think that'll have to be my tactic too. Holding white knuckled onto the fridge..

I just searched for BLW and it came up in the 'groups' section. And then there was a link to click if you want to join the group

my DT's used to gag at the meerest hint of a lump, but then i didn;t do BLW, i did the 'baby rice for a week, carrot for a week' thing....i am too much of a control freak to let them dictate!

My DS is 6 months tomorrow and we're going to present him with a carrot stick to celebrate! As a BLW first-timer, how steamed does it have to be? We normally have them pretty al dente but will that be a problem for him?

Just joined group and added vid of DD's first meal!

And my answer is ye, let him spit it out, but be perpared to want to intervene for months!

MegBusset, I always cooked carrot to be much softer than al dente - soft enough to easily cut in half with the side of a fork.

The baby will still be able to hold it but you won't have to worry about him choking.

I give DD very undercooked broccoli - she likes to munch it. She prefers all her veggies that way. Don't worry about the gagging, it's gonna happen, just stay close and count to five before you intervene. Honestly, you will know it's not just gagging if your child chokes!
