Weaning

BLW - what's good to start with?

DD2 is nearly 5 months so I'm starting to get my weaning head on in preparation. I'm going to give BLW a try (did the slop route with DD1 as I'd never heard of anything different!).

So what's good to give to a baby who's never met food before?

If you go to www.babyledweaning.com there is a section in there with some suggestions for first foods.

(and please note the ultra cute baby at the top of the page in the 6month+ photos. She's mine!)

And if you were having trouble finding the suggested first foods - it's in the FAQ section. It's just some pointers but we found it a useful place to start.

So when are you supposed to introduce wheat, eggs, meat, fish etc?

I was very uninformed when weaning DD1, went with the "from 4 months" jars so assumed anything in them was ok...

On the very same website there is a really good link to a list of foods and which month they can be introduced- great to print out and pin up somewhere.. I think its on a Gill Rapley link?

MoosMa - Depends slightly if you are worried about allergy - if there is a history of food allergy in your family, you may want to hold back a bit with the egg, fish and wheat.

Otherwise, things can be brought in fairly quickly if you want. Egg should obviously be well cooked.

On the babyledweaning.com website, the link on the bottom right will take you to the guidelines for weaning any baby, and these apply whether babies are BLW or not.

maybe that is the link you were talking about jojosmama?

I introduced meat & fish at 7 months & eggs I think & at 7 & half...echo what aDad says about allergies..etc..wheat must have been at 6 months too. All in all I introduced things a lot quicker with DS than I did with DD but then again she was Annabel Karmelled all the way.. If only I knew then what I know now...

I've started BLW with my daughter. She's two weeks into it and I'm really lucky as she's devouring everything I put infront of her with gusto. Her favourate foods are the tomatoes and strawberries (both of which I know lots of people are wary of). I just have let her eat anything I have cooked at home - from cheese sandwiches, pasta to mousakka. I know that some people has introduced food more slowly - but as long as it's not high in salt, or has nuts, unpasturised cheese or honey. I just let her get on with it!!

With things like tomatoes do you peel them? DD1 (22mo) still has trouble with skins of things.

Dd will put a whole cherry tomato or normal size tomato segment into her mouth, she chews for a while and then spits the skin out!

DD got some tomato skin stuck on the roof of her mouth, then she clamped her mouth closed and moaned so I couldn't do anything to help!

DD (6.5 months) is very nifty with tomatoes - I give her a quarter (seeds sucked out as the juice irritates her skin) and then I bite a small bit out of each of the long sides to make it easier for her to hold. She sucks the flesh off the skin, turns the segment around and then does the same until the whole thing is clean and then just drops the skin. Very cool to watch!

Never peel anything...DS just eats the flesh & then drops the skin...very funny to watch..
