Hi there ,

This is my first post and here I am complaining. I started weaning Sean at 4.5 months as he is a big boy(Weighs 20lbs now) He took bits and pieces but would gulp down 5 8oz bottles of formula a day. after a while he was eating about 6tblsp of veg at lunch and some rice in the evening, then I tried to introduce some protein in the form of chicken caserole and he refused it point blank! Thats a week ago and now he will eat no veg or anything savoury but will eat a tiny bit of fruit. if I offer him anything other than his bottle he cries and arches his back and spits it out. My dilema is do I continue to give him as much milk as he wants and If I do will that mean he wont take solids??? He currently drinks between 35 and 40 oz of milk. I really dont want him to become a fussy eater. Hope someone can give me some advice.

Why are yu so worried aabout solids at 6 months? A lot of babies haven't even started on solids at this age. Milk should be his main source of nutrition until 1 year and solids can be for taste/fun/playing with for a while.
Have you looked at the blw (baby led weaning) threads. Basically letting your baby feed himself at his speed when he's ready rather than purees

Don't worry about the lack of solids - the milk is far more important. He may be teething and it is uncomfortable to chew, or maybe he just wants the comfort of the bottle. Give it a break for a week or so, then try again with something you know he likes.

As long as he still takes his milk, he will be absolutley fine. don't worry that he takes more formula than it says on the tin either - my ds took 5 x 8 ox bottles before weaning too.

Yes, try just sticking some finger foods in front of him. He'll be fine with just milk though.

Hi again,
O.k, Irish person here, we have a philosophy of stuffing as much food into our children as possible!!! I had been following Gina Fords weaning guide as I hadnt a clue. I weaned so early as he was waking 2-3 times a night starved with the hunger. I suppose I am confused because he ate so well for a couple of weeks and then stopped. Never heard of baby led weaning before, it sounds like common sense but do they not gag, sean gags if I give him mashed banana!! Ny mother weaned us at 2 months!!. And alot of Irish people wean at 3 months, I was positively over cautious waiting until now. Its actually funny some days he gets so excited when he sees his bottle coming. Thanks for the tips, I feel better now!

Gagging is Ok. It's not the same as choking.

No gagging is what stops them choking, it's fine
