Weaning

Should I stop weaning?

Sorry for the long post! My dd is 6 months next week but we started weaning this week as she'd met all the milestones. Last week she had a bit of baby porridge which she chomped on a little before spitting it out and she had rusks a couple of times that she really went to town on. So this week we started with veg. I've been giving some chunks on her tray as well as doing a puree. Mon she had potato, first spoon she sort of took but second spoon made her gag (I know they need to learn what their gag reflex is) but it made her bring up her previous milk food. Tues we did broccoli, she screamed when it went in her mouth and wouldn't touch the bits on her tray. Today was cauliflower. She got the tiniest bit on her tongue before coughing, gagging and screaming. Again she wouldn't touch the stuff on her tray. Put a spoon and some toys on the tray and they all went straight in her mouth! 🙄 Has the potato traumatised her? Should I stop for now and try again at a later date??

I would stop and try again in 2 weeks or so.

The same thing happened with my DD, in hindsight she just wasn’t ready, and waiting a few weeks made all the difference.

I would be trying some veg that have a bit more flavour to start with. Potato and cauliflower are particularly bland. I understand that the general recommendation is not to start with fruit, but how about sweeter veg like carrot, sweet potato and butternut squash?

Yes sweet potato was a huge hit with DS - even now (11 months) he doesn't like normal potato. Also peas and brocolli went down well at the start. I did introduce fruit early too - he particularly enjoys pears and bananas. I know they say delaying sweet food will give them a taste for savoury but it hasn't seem to have done any harm with DS - he eats both with great gusto.

Thanks. Think I will stop for a bit then restart with something sweeter. I just started with those veggies as I was following a chart in the Ella's kitchen book. It's a just strange she won't even touch the chunky bits on her tray when absolutely anything else goes straight in the mouth!! Fingers crossed a little break will help.
