Weaning

Not liking the IKEA highchair :(

DS is almost 10 months and is constantly trying to climb out of it. I need something more secure, but still easy to clean. Any suggestions please?

Doesn't the safety harness stop them climbing out?

He managed to pull one leg through, and leans over the side really far. It's only a lap buckle and I'd prefer shoulder buckles as well.

We used a booster seat from 6 months for weaning, no highchair at all. They're generally a bit smaller and a lot of the trays are removable and have a number of settings so easier to out the tray on 'tighter' so it's harder to escape. They're generally half the price of a regular high chair too. We had a very basic one from argos, which lasted two dc from 6 months til around 2 1/2.

Are there holes to fit a proper harness?

Sounds like you don't have the strap tight enough. My dd who is 2 and very headstrong still can't get out of it just because she's decided.

You can buy a safety harness with shoulder straps and attach it - amazon have them.

My main gripe about the Ikea one is the splayed legs are a trip hazard and the tray is hard to get off. We have a Tripp trapp (I know, middle class wankery, we are in scandiwegia if it’s any excuse) and it is great. Tray pops off, hard to escape from

Booster seat is a good idea.

I will tighten the straps and see what happens at lunch!

There are only holes for the lap buckles.

I have an old Tripp trapped style chair but don't have the tray or straps anymore. Plus the straps didn't attach at shoulder level so we're basically useless. /Moaner/

The newer Antilops are better as it’s a a lap belt with a bit that goes in between the legs as well. When mine went through an escaping stage I bought some baby reins that could convert into straps and used those on the chair.

I think you can put a shoulder harness type on as it threads through the same holes. If you like everything else about the chair it might be worth trying that first.

I do think that if you have a climber they'll try to climb out of anything though.

Failing that, try duck tape Wink

You can get a harness at mothercare that fits using just the existing two holes and goes over the shoulders.

We didn’t use the Tripp trapp harness as it was shit. The cheapie amazon one was good though - part of a set with Walker reins.

Have you got him at the table with the tray off? This is what we did when ds got bigger.

No, but I'll try that too!

Which one do you have? The more expensive one could easily have a harness attached round the back rest. The white one, looking at ours, could possibly have a harness attached to the current straps? Wouldn't be perfect but better. Do you have the cushion? That makes the seat space on both much smaller.

Just the simple white one, NCT sale jobbie. I avoided the cushion because we are doing blw... Messy. I like being able to take it apart for the dishwasher.

I have (the apparently middle class and wanky Hmm) Tripp Trapp and DD can’t get out if it- yet. She can climb into it though. I’m not sure if this is a good thing.

We use it without the tray so she sits at the table with us.

The tray fixing holes might work to attach a harness if you are using it at the table. [although you might not need a harness at all then as museumum says.]

Ah, I was going to suggest normal reins with the Tripp Trapp - I think we had some bog standard ones that we used with our TT and had the chair pushed up to the table. Wipe clean table cloth under the chair as well as on the table... mucky eaters here.

The cushion is easily washable and does help to stop my dd being able to get her legs up (she also tries to escape!) so may be worth a try. Or I think I’d put reins on her and attach it to the harness/tie it round the chair Grin

I ended up with a cosatto noodle as it has a 5 point harness. Before I started to wean her I was set on the ikea one but when I went to get one they just looked so small and flimsy and easily toppable and my DD is quite a large baby
