Weaning, constipated, see GP?

Hi I have started weaning my 6.5m DD the usual purees I have made myself as well as some baby rice. Currently 2 small meals a day. She hadn't pooed for 5 days! She's EBF. I am offering water from a free flowing beaker ( I have yet been unable to get her to take a bottle) but she seems to just dribble the little she takes out so fear this isn't helping. I was given advice from a friend to give some orange juice to move things along. I didn't dilute it, which I now am worried was a mistake to. I gave a calpol syringe full ( no other way of getting it in her) and then an hour later she has a small maybe the size of 2 x 50p poo this morning. But nothing else. I keep thinking when she goes my god it's going to be explosive! But I am worried. How long is too long to before she goes properly? Should I see a GP? Or can a pharmacist give any advice? I stopped all food today as well. Any advice or experience would be welcomed. Thanks

An experiencing exactly the same thing with DD atm. Just started weaning for two meals a day and she hadn't pooed properly in 9 days.
Took her to GP twice as she was crying in pain every time she needed to go. Dr prescribed lactulose eventually but try prune purée (Ella's Kitchen do a little pouch) or weetabix mixed with bm for breakfast to try to get things going.

I would also try prune puree or prune juice.

I think it is normal for babies to get constipated at the start of weaning. Orange juice is usually the first thing recommended by HVs and if it does not work, going for prunes is often the next step.

There is absolutely no need to worry about giving LO non diluted orange juice. You dilute to mitigate the impact but looks like it did not work anyway.

You may want to dilute prune juice though (to start with).

Good luck!

Thanks for your advice, I will try prunes tomorrow and see if that helps. We're on holiday in the UK and I think being away makes me worry more because Thinking what if I need to see a GP etc. On the plus side she's not in any discomfort at the moment but the wind keeps waking her up its so loud Grin

Don't give wheetabix is causes constipation in some babies.

As you are ebf I would just offer milk and no solids.

Pears and prunes definately help.

Try the I love you massage on the stomach - google it for a video.

I'd keep off the baby rice- it bungs them up and they get very little nutritionally from it.

Don't worry about bottles, free flow cups are fine.

Good luck

I'd stop the baby rice. Other foods to avoid for a few days are potatoes, sweet potatoes and banana.

Thank you. I'm off out now to seek out the prunes and hoping they have the desired effect 💩💩 Grin Ahh she's been loving sweet pots and banana so I've probably been adding to the problem. I'm gonna stop the rice too. Thanks again for the advice x

Yiu could also try offering some high water foods to ease things along. Things like brocolli and cauliflower, either as purée or lightly steamed as finger foods, melon, soup and jelly, though possibly nit mixed mixed together...Grin
