Weaning

6.5 month old terrible constipation

Hi all

My poor LO has had a rough night of crying and trumping on and off. We started on solids a week or so ago, first just at dinner time and I've also just introduced at breakfast which she's not bothered with.

So far she's had varying mixtures of:

Sweet potato, carrot, parsnip, pumpkin, peas, broccoli, Apple, strawberries, banana, natural yoghurt.

Yesterday in particular she had strawberry and apple and then natural yoghurt with banana in.

Any ideas what could have upset her tum? I've herd banana can be a bit too binding for them?

Shall I lay off the solids a while? Any advice greatly appreciated (although we have decided traditional weaning, not BLW, is best for us.)

Thanks!

I've heard that about banana as well. DS gets a bit constipated from time to time and both pear and prune purée have helped. I'd probably give solids a miss for a day or two as well, it's fine to do that at 6.5 months.

We had this at the start with DS- i don't know whether it's because he started swallowing more. It's just their digestive system working out what's going on. I was told it's more tricky for breastfed babies as breastmilk is so easily digested (if that applies to you). Encouraging him to take more water (or mix more water in with the purée) and giving pear/ prune purée if he missed a poo for a day really helped. He's now 7 months (stRted weaning at 6 months) and eating a variety of food and poos just great!

Is she constipated? I always find that you have these sorts of days and periods with babies and assume constipation as maybe they haven't pooed in a day or so and then they go and do a perfectly normal explosion. I do think it's possible their tummies are uncomfortable with the food but it's so so hard to know.

I'd slow down the introduction of additional meals - let her stay on one meal a day for a while until her tummy is coping with it

Constipation is common at the start, probably not just to do with the banana. I give pear or prune purée every day to help

I think most babies go through periods of constipation when they go on solids. I remember giving my DD diluted prune juice. I only needed to do it once - it worked great:). You can try prune puree or pear puree as suggested above. HVs also recommend diluted orange juice.

I wouldn't go completely off solids but I wouldn't introduce any additional meals until the constipation is sorted.
