Weaning

"Something non-allergenic like fruit"

hunkermunker · 03/03/2007 14:53

I'm allergic to apples, plums, peaches, some pears, greener tomatoes, nectarines, cherries and sometimes grapes.

But, hey, you want to wean your 4mo onto something non-allergenic - try...air.

Huh?

Oh, just the "s/he's hungry, surely a bit of apple won't hurt" stuff that's trotted out so often - just wanted to point out that fruit isn't always non-allergenic.

As for bananas... Lots of people allergic to those.

I'm NOT allergic to rhubarb though

I'm allergic to kiwifruit.

My mum never knew that, because I had a typically working class diet (Fray Bentos featured heavily, as did cups of sweet milky tea) and I never tasted one until I left home

bearing in mind I am only 26!

but to my mum, fruit was apples, bananas, grapes for a big treat, and seasonal pick your own. OTOH we were given every vegetable she could get her hands on in the 80's.

Ah, kiwi is VERY allergenic too.

As are strawberries.

Best left till a child's over one.

neither of mine have ever had kiwi, and a mate has never let hers have strawberry because of such a strong family history of strawberry allergy..

Funny though, I have always reckoned kiwi and strawberry taste similar!

How do I know? Because if I eat them, my gums itch and swell up, my throat itches and my mouth hurts.

i am allergic to banana, and I lived on them when I was a child

I'm allergic to raw apple. Ok with cooked though. I know I'm allergic because I get a migraine and then vomit within an hour of eating raw apple.

Which kinda proves my point about not weaning 4mo babies (who shouldn't even be having food At All) onto fruit.

Wow... that is interesting about pineapples dissolving your mouth!! Me and DS always say that eating fresh pineapple 'hurts'. Rest of family assume we are nutters. Our tongues look as though they are covered in deep cuts after eating fresh pineapple though.

Pineapple has some kind of enzyme in it that breaks meat down in it, iirc.

Are you allergic to salicylates Hunker? That list sounds familiar from a salicylate allergic family I once worked with....I could be talking bollocks, though

walnuts and some tomatoes make my tongue hurt...same for my mum and my sister. My brother in law thinks we have made it up just to annoy him!
