Skylanders - I'm lost!

DS7 is desperate for skylanders even though I suspect he doesn't know what it is really!
I don't know what it is myself! I was already thinking of getting him a 3ds for birthday so can he use the proper skylanders on this? I read that the main characters aren't on this so is this a problem?
I don't really want to go down the road of an Xbox just yet!
Is there a guide for dummies somewhere?

Oh and also have an old Wii could I use this?

Yes skylanders can be used on a wii and it would give a better game experience than the ds

So I can just wrap up the old Wii and he can use any of the games? Does it need a portal for the figures to go on?

Ah ok, great thanks dementedpixie, I didn't even see the 'U'. Yeah I think he will be OK with it not being new, he just wants skylanders :)
