8yo ds wants to play Minecraft with a friend of his. How can they get into each other's worlds?

They need to either play on the same server which is already up and running.

Or set their own server up. Benefit of this is they control who else can come on it, noone can smash their house up, etc. downside is you need to pay. Think I pay £6 a month for dd's server.

Why does it cost to host a server?

What are you playing on? If Xbox then you can play over Xbox live, you need to know the other persons Xbox live name and add them as a friend, once that's done they can invite each other to play when they are online. You can also set permissions etc so players can break/steal anything.

Xbox live membership costs money, I pay £5.99 a month, it's cheaper to pay a full year if you can afford it, there's other benefits from live membership though such as two free games a month. My Bil buys his membership very cheaply on ebay but I don't know if it's dodgy.

If it's PS3 then you need to know each other's names on PlAyStAtion network.

If it's on Apple devices then if you are on the same wireless network and the person hosting is "visible" under settings then the other person can join.

It costs to host a server because you have to use a third party server hosting company to host the server for you. So I use a company in Amsterdam and they physically have a huge premesis full of server hosting equipment

I see. How complicated is it to have your own server?

He plays on a PC.

It is a bit complicated. Dd has worked it all out now and does it herself.

We now use envioushost as I found her previous hosting company too complicated every time she wanted a different plugin added.

I googled user friendly minecraft servers and envioushost came up in a list.

They've got email support if you get stuck as well.
