Edinburgh at New Year - Please help

Hi

I'm looking to travel to Edinburgh with a 4 year and 6-month old on 1st Jan 2010 returning on the 4th Jan 2010.

I have found out that the 4th is also a Bank Holiday in Bonnie Scotland.

Does anyone know whether the 1st and 4th will be completely 'dead' in Edinburgh with few shops, restuarants, attractions, etc. open? Obviously I won't bother going if it's going to be a ghost town with little to do.
