Villages with walking and train access

Looking for suggestions of pretty villages that you can get to on the train which have easy access to lovely walks, and you can get to on the train.

Ideally, northern England. Scotland will be too far, as it's just for the weekend.

There's a direct service from Manchester to Windermere. The West Coast mainline connects London and Glasgow to the stations of Oxenholme, Penrith and Carlisle, all of which then provide onward travel to Windermere station. Both Kendal and Staveley have stations. There are plenty of nice walks from Windermere www.lakedistrict.gov.uk/the-blog/blog-posts/windermere-walks and no shortage of places to stay or eat.

I was coming on to say Staveley too - you see loads of people getting off the train to go for walks. And then you can go to the Hawkshead Brewery when you get back!

Staveley, which I have never heard of, looks lovely. Thanks both for the suggestion.

Like Windermere too, but it can be so busy, ideally looking for somewhere smaller.

Church Stretton for the Long Mynd. Actually more of a town but scenery is lovely.

How about Malvern for the hills? Two stations with good access to the hills and a third in Colwall which is a lovely village.

Malvern probably too far, needs to be Yorkshire/Cumbria/Peak District, although will bear it mind for future...

Church Stretton possibly too far, but will check it out. Thanks!

Look at the Hope Valley line. Hathersage and Edale are on it. Hope is pretty too. I've also stayed in Castleton and Eyam using that line.

How about somewhere on the Settle to Carlisle line? The route starts in Leeds and goes through Dent and Horton in Ribblesdale. Lots of good walks round there including Pen y Gent and Ingleborough if you're into climbing hills

Matlock and Grindleford are the two that spring to mind for me.
