Hoping to go on a short break next week with DC aged 5 and 9. Thinking maybe Whitby or similar NE seaside resort. Does anyone know of a really good family friendly hotel?

The YHA next to Whitby Abbey is perfect for families. Don't be put off by the fact that it's accredited to YHA; it certainly won't be full of smoking, partying teens! It's a gorgeous Grade 1 listed mansion.
Private ensuite family rooms are spacious and homely but you do have to provide your own towels. Family rooms get s free ticket to Whitby Abbey.
There is limited parking onsite, but pay and display parking nearby.
There is free WIFI in the hostel.
There is a playroom downstairs near to Reception which was full of toys and books. They were in really good condition when we went. There is a large garden outside too with picnic tables which would be perfect for playing in during the summer months. Due to the nature of the YHA, I wouldn’t have any hesitations about letting the kids run wild and make loads of noise!
There is a kitchen in case you want cook yourselves. We didn’t use this as there is a Tea Room onsite which serves breakfast and evening meals. Breakfast cost £5.99 for Adults and £2.99 for Children. This consisted of cereal, yoghurt, a full English Breakfast and toast. There was also a playhouse in the Tea Room too.
We wandered down to Whitby for fish and chips in the evening.

Not a hotel, but we've used Ingrid Flute's Booking Site to get an apartment in Whitby before, they have lots of different places on their site to rent. Our apartment was lovely and within a short walk to the harbour.

Thanks all three of you! Rice the YHA hostel sounds amazing. I’ve stayed in the Ambleside one with my children before and the facilities were excellent so I’m really pleased to discover another YHA belter.

Cheers also for chippy and apartment booking tips.

Excited now I know a bit more!

The Ellerby hotel is a bit more pricy than the YHA but it's a lovely hotel and very friendly staff, family friendly too.

I listened to everyone when they said the magpie do the best chips so when my husband went to get some from the first place he found, I said I didn't want any and went to the magpie later and they were rubbish! His however were lovely. Can't remember the name but we walked from the far side of the beach, down the big slope and it was first one on the left when you reach the main stretch. I think it was maybe Greek themed or something.

Spending the day in robin hoods bay was our highlight

The goth and steampunk weekend, usually around Halloween is fantastic fun

Possibly not great for you this October (though the forecast looks almost as warm as we had in July), but we had a lovely stay at the YHA Boggle Hole (aside from being disturbed by a family with a child who was unwell all night and clearly a tad upset).

I am sure English Heritage are planning something for Halloween at Whitby Abbey (illuminations etc), so I hope you found somewhere in Whitby etc (that YHA is right next door - I might try that one in a future trip).

The magpie is by far the best place for food in Whitby however it is still closed following 2 fires in spring this year!

Second choice would be trenchers by the roundabout or quarterdeck at the end of the strip.

We stayed in a cottage on the raithwaite estate at sandsend - five minute drive into Whitby. Beautiful beach and cafe at sandsend. Children loved the swimming pool at the hotel and we enjoyed the cocktails 🍸 my vote is with trenchers fish n chips x

Ok well we decided against Whitby this half term but it's still very high on my list for our next uk holiday. Am now at Peebles Hydro and really enjoying it. UK holidays totally rock.
