Where would be a good place to visit for the day just north of the English/Scottish border?

We always holiday in the Lake District (hill walking), and rarely leave the National Park. This year, my youngest has asked if we can go to Scotland one day. We have visited Hadrians Wall before (and anyway, that is not actually on the border, is it?) so we are looking for somewhere just over the border to visit so that our youngest can say he has been to Scotland.

Any suggestions?

Gretna? The area around Dumfries and Galloway is lovely and probably possible in a day. The Wickerman was filmed around there but I'm guessing your DS is a but young for that film tour.

Just a bit! I forgot to say, children are aged between 9 and 16, and we (well, dh and I!) like scenery and history, but really anything to be a focus for what will be quite a long drive will be fine.

Cocoa bean factory is fun loads inside and out. Eh best to google in for location, near dumfries, maybe to far north.
