Dressing young DS for riding

What do boys wear on their legs to ride these days? We don’t see many boys at the RSs we go to, so I don’t have a clue.

Pink jodhs and sparkly whips etc seems to be a thing now, so the world has obviously changed since I were a lass. And heaven only knows where I formed my tastes re equestrian attire Pullein Thompson books, most likely as I aspire to baggy-thighed beige jodhs and a tweed jacket, 1950s-style Grin

Anyway, DS (nearly 5) is just starting lead-rein lessons so very early days. He’s been wearing lined jeans but they don’t seem ideal.

The jodhpur boots he’s borrowed all seem narrow on the foot as well as tight around the ankle. Is there a brand that’s good for children with wider feet?

I’m really struggling to think of Christmas presents this year so it’s a good opportunity to buy something I’d probably have bought anyway and stick it under the tree.

Not too worried if kit gets outgrown with minimal wear as will happily pass it on in due course.

Most the boys at ours just wear beige jodphurs, polo shirt and boots with chaps.

I went to an equine store and physically tried boots on my daughter as she is wide footed! We got Dublin ones in the end.

Thanks for the quick reply, Lala.

Did you get the Dublin Universals (synthetic) or one of the leather styles? And is the sizing true or did you have to size up or down?

Happy to hear beige jodhs will do, not least because he can have DD’s hand-me-downs eventually.

Decathlon online have good unisex kit.

Wouldn't recommend their boots though.

You can buy denim jods or i have seen boys wearing plain coloured ones, beige, black, navy etc.

My son is now 15 but been riding since he was 8. He had a pair of ‘punky ponies’ navy and red when he was younger that he was keen on. Aside from that, plain. Beige, brown, green and grey.

He has brogini jod boots and I think his chaps are shires.

Just wears regular tops and jumpers. Hoodies at home Although officially they’re a no no with PC.

He’s always cold so in winter sticks joggers over the top for hacking/pottering at home, but braved the cold to look smarter for lessons.

Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts.

I went for beige jodhs and brown Dublin boots in the end Smile
